THMaybe it’s just the angle, but the 367-foot Freire “Renaissance” is out here looking like a 12-year-old playing with 10-year-olds. And mind you the two yachts directly to her right in this video are 400-footers. The blue-hulled one is the 400-foot “Kismet” while the white-hulled one in between them is the 404-foot “Golden Odyssey,” a last-minute entry to the Monaco Yacht Show, as well as the biggest boat to ever be shown here. WEHawaiʻi celebrated 50 years of Hōkūleʻa's history of voyaging on Saturday at Kualoa Regional Park, where the double-hulled canoe first launched.
Many older navigators and crew members face the pressure of passing down their knowledge to the next generation to ensure that voyaging will never go extinct.
The Polynesian Voyaging Society, an Oʻahu-based nonprofit created in 1973 to research and perpetuate traditional Polynesian voyaging methods, has thousands of crew members who have been a part of Hōkūleʻa's history.
Lehua Kamalu, 38, made her mark as Hōkūleʻa's first female captain and navigator. She embarked on that 17-day voyage in 2022 from Honolulu's Sand Island to Tahiti on the ancient sea route.
"Our teachers knew that to be connected to our language, we had to be connected to the culture where these words, these stories and values all came from," she said. "I remember so many opportunities that they would find and make sure we understood where we were going, what Hōkūleʻa was and where she had come from."

TEIn this week’s throwback of He Tānga Manawa, we see the late Māori carver and navigator Tā Hekenukumai (Hector) Busby and his crew preparing the double-hulled waka Te Aurere for its first voyage to Rarotonga in 1992.
They only used traditional Māori navigation tools, such as the stars, moon, sun, bird, wave patterns, and currents to make their way across the Pacific.

WBTwo bodies were found in the fishing boat Seahorse that went missing off Cape Cod earlier this week.
The sunken white-hulled vessel was spotted around 2 p.m. Wednesday by a recreational boater about two miles off the coast of Brewster.
Family members say 64-year-old Shawn Arsenault and his girlfriend, Felicia Daley, left Rock Harbor Marina in Orleans on Sunday morning to go clamming but never returned.
The incident remains under investigation.
