If your child is hyperactive — it’s not about being naughty or misbehaving. Hyperactivity is their body’s way of saying “I need to move to feel better.” It’s often linked to sensory needs — their brain needs movement to feel calm and focused. And asking them to “sit still” without fulfilling this need? It only makes them more restless, frustrated, and anxious. What should you do as a parent? → Create a movement-friendly routine at home. Movement is not a reward for finishing homework — it’s a need for their regulation. Here’s what helps: ✔️ Wall pushes or chair pushes before study time. ✔️ Heavy work activities like carrying grocery bags or lifting cushions. ✔️ Safe jumping on a mattress or trampoline. ✔️ Sensory play — water play, kinetic sand, playdough for calming input. ✔️ Movement breaks after every 20-25 minutes of sitting. Remember — hyperactive kids don’t need control. They need understanding and the right strategies to help them balance their energy. We’ve shared practical movement ideas in the caption to support your child better. Because an understood child is always a calmer child. Being a parent is not easy—especially being a mother to a hyperactive child. Their energy is unstoppable, their mind is always running, and many times it feels impossible to understand what they really need. When you cannot understand their behavior, frustration naturally builds for both the parent and the child. But hyperactivity is not a problem—it is energy that needs the right direction and awareness. When parents learn to analyze their child’s behavior with the right psychological understanding, parenting becomes calmer, more connected, and more joyful. If you are raising a hyperactive child and feeling overwhelmed, you are not alone. It’s time to learn, connect, and grow with other conscious parents. ✨ Join our community for hyperactive parents Psychology is Natural Club (Psychology Wellness Community). Hyperactive Child? Your Calm Is the Real Therapy 🤍 When a child is hyperactive, it can truly test a parent’s patience. The constant movement, impulsive behavior, and endless energy can feel overwhelming. But shouting, hitting, or screaming at a hyper child does not teach regulation it only increases their anxiety and makes the energy even more chaotic. Hyperactive children don’t need louder voices. They need calmer nervous systems around them. When you slow down, hold them gently, and respond with patience, you are teaching their brain something powerful—how to feel safe and how to calm down. Children learn emotional regulation from the nervous system of the parent standing in front of them. Your calm presence becomes their lesson in calmness. A hyper child is not trying to trouble you. They are trying to express energy that they themselves don’t yet know how to regulate. What they need most is a parent who can guide them with patience, structure, and love. Pause. Breathe. Hold them. Calm them. Because a regulated parent raises a regulated child. Increasing attention in hyperactive or sensory seeking children can seem tough so here are some ways to increase their ability to attend to tasks longer with fewer task avoidance. It’s important to note that I do make sure my clients are regulated prior to focused work so engaging in activities right before that consist of deep pressure and movement really help! I also provide choices to help make the task of initiating work easier. Once started try the following: 1️⃣Prone Position - lying on the belly helps your child not only focus better on what’s directly in front of them (without the distractions from sitting up and looking around) but they also receive whole body sensory input which can be calming for work. 2️⃣Oral input - if your child is an oral seeking one, then deep pressure in the mouth from straws, chewy necklaces (like the one in the video), crunchy/chewy snacks and/or gum all help with alertness and calm. You can also try other calming sensory tools such as a weighted blanket or noise reduction headphones. 3️⃣Slant boards are great to obtain the perfect wrist and neck posture but also to help your child focus on what’s directly in front of them in a way that’s comfortable by raising their line of vision. Let me know your thoughts! Save this to remember later!

Stop calling your active child HYPERACTIVE Your child is not trying to be disturb you. Your child is trying to calm down Get your child a swing Rhythmic movement can make a child feel steadier and calmer. Arrange for your child to climb The “heavy work” improves focus and reduces impulsive behaviour. Encourage Water play The constant touch and gentle resistance to the whole body is soothing. It helps the nervous system slow down and settle. Share this with someone who criticizes your child and calls them “HYPER” Let them understand that your child is not being BAD – they are trying to GROW THEIR BRAIN

Often Hyperactive children are impulsive as well ! So if the child is having following features like; 1️⃣Switching from one activity to other quickly 2️⃣Getting distracted too often looking at other toys/ things/ people 3️⃣ Moving or fidgeting a lot 4️⃣Unable to pay sustained attention 5️⃣ Not comfortable sitting for longer Then try the mentioned techniques since they provide more structured and less distractive environment for the child where you can facilitate meaningful interaction / learning/ play. Using adapted seating like sitting on cushion, theraband for foot rest, sitting on balance disc / gym ball, using rocking chair or high chair gives them additional vestibular and/ or proprioception input which helps them regulate their vestibular system ( movement sense) and sit longer. Bonus tip: Use visual schedule Give movement/ sensory break Choose activities of child’s interest Follow @occupational_therapy_verticles for more DM if you require online consultations and sessions #hyperactive #sitting #distractions #adhd #autism #downsyndrome #childdevelopment #parenting #parentingtips #occupationaltherapy #toddlers #teachingkids #mindfulparenting #play #mom #dad
