✨ The IBS-C girls know this feeling ✨ With the festive season coming up, so many of my clients are getting ready to take time off, travel, and do things a little differently - and holiday constipation has been a BIG topic in consultations lately. And it makes sense. When you’re away, everything changes at once… what you’re eating, how much you’re moving, how much water you’re drinking, even when (and where 😅) you’re going to the toilet. And for IBS-C, that can be enough to throw things off pretty quickly. So here are a few of the simple strategies I’ve been sharing with clients and thought you might find helpful too: 1️⃣ Keep fluids up Aim for roughly 30 mL per kg of body weight. Flying, heat, walking more, festive drinks… it all adds up 2️⃣ Add fruit or veg wherever you can Spinach with eggs at brekkie, a side salad at lunch, snacking on fruit, steamed greens at dinner. Little additions go a long way 3️⃣ Gentle movement counts Walks after meals, swims, sightseeing on foot. If there’s one thing I’ve noticed, its that we don’t always pick up on the less obvious symptoms of constipation… Nausea! 🤢 We define and diagnose constipation by: ✔️Frequency of stool ✔️Consistency of stool ✔️A feeling of incomplete evacuation ✔️Manual maneuvers needed to evacuate stool BUT - would a patient find ANY of this distressing if there wasn’t any other symptoms? …. no, not typically.  We can’t just focus on ‘does this constipation check the boxes’ - what we SHOULD be focusing on is ‘what symptoms is my patient experiencing that is causing them distress?’ 😩 The literature almost never mentions: - Bloating - Early satiety  - Nausea - Hemorrhoids or pain in passing stool - Feeling of pressure and fullness, or even reflux Yet when patients show up at my office, these are the things that are impacting their quality of life, and often give us clues into whether it could be constipation. 🔍 So how do we manage it?  1️⃣ Reduce fecal loading as the first goal. Try to get them cleared out so we can establish a baseline and see what symptoms are left. 2️⃣ Get them comfortable! Use strategies to improve stool consistency, gut motility, and bloating - which often relieves the nausea, early satiety, and feeling of fullness. 3️⃣ Build a routine - get in front of constipation and stay in front of it. When that fails, have a ‘rescue routine’ to get back to baseline, again.  If this isn’t part of your constipation plan, it should be. Nagging suspicion you have IBS 🤔? Now you might have some less-than-ideal digestive symptoms, but does that mean you have the condition? ⁠ ⁠ Here we share the official diagnostic criteria for IBS. You may not have realised but you need ALL THREE criteria in order to be diagnosed.⁠ ⁠ 1️⃣ Recurrent tummy pain: On average, at least one day per week. ⁠ ⁠ 2️⃣ Pooping-related symptoms: Pain should be associated with two or more of the following: ⁠ a. Related to pooping (i.e. pain improves or worsens when pooping) ⁠ b. Associated with a change in the frequency of your poop (i.e. pain is more common when your poops are more frequent or less frequent than usual) ⁠ c. Associated with a change in the appearance of your poop (i.e. pain is more common when your poops are more soft or hard than usual) ⁠ ⁠ 3️⃣ Persistent and chronic symptoms: Criteria 1 and 2 must have been present for the past three months and symptoms need to have started at least six months ago. ⁠ ⁠ ✅ If you said ‘yes’ to this trio, then do still head to your GP/ family physician to rule out other conditions such as coeliac disease and inflammatory bowel disease and to confirm a diagnosis. A gut specialist dietitian can also help guide you towards diagnosis as well as dietary treatment. At @theguthealthclinic, we work with gastroenterologists (gut specialist medical doctors), pelvic floor physiotherapists and biofeedback nurses to provide holistic care. We can also request blood and stool tests from your GP, or if appropriate, book them directly with you in our clinic.⁠ ⁠ ❌ And if the above do not ALL apply to you? In that case, your symptoms could be explained by another type of functional gut disorder, such as functional diarrhoea or functional constipation. Hey :) I used deal with IBS (to say the least) & now I don’t 🤘🏽I know, I know, I’m so grateful but I didn’t get here because of luck— Your doctors 🥼 job is to keep you alive & tell you what is going on. So when you get diagnosed with “IBS” they are doing their job—you explain symptoms, they make sure you are OKAY, then tell you have IBS. Cool…but now what 😩 Here’s a few things I had to learn on my own that led to me healing my IBS symptoms like bloating, chronic constipation, etc: 1) IBS just means your gut is irritated. If you learn how to “de-irritate” it, then you won’t have IBS symptoms 👀 In other words…you don’t HAVE to settle with a gut that acts up constantly if you don’t want to. Learn how to get + keep your gut not irritated! 2) Many people with IBS have bacterial overgrowth—some have full blown SIBO, others just have an imbalance. Either way—if you do have either of these, once you address the bacterial imbalance = a lot less bloating, gas, etc 3) You don’t need to eat “perfectly” to not have IBS symptoms—you just need to figure out what foods/way of eating actually works for your unique body. Once you learn to eat in a way that your body likes, so much of your IBS symptoms simply don’t happen. 😌 4) IBS is not random. IBS is not your body malfunctioning. IBS is a response to something(s) being out of balance. Any of these: Your diet, your sleep/wake cycle, when + how you eat, how stressed you feel/how you manage stress, + more can influence your IBS—once you get yourself back into alignment, your most stubborn, frustrating symptoms go bye bye 👋🏽 They did for me + countless clients (see my highlights). *not medical advice, ever 🤗 #ibs #guthealing #functionalnutrition #guthealth #ibsc
