NEBREAKING NEWS: The UK Government recently announced that it will be withdrawing funding for public IB Diploma Programs from 2026-2027 onwards in order to redirect that money towards A Levels.
Around 20 state schools currently offer the IB program in the UK, and until now, each of these schools has received an additional £2,400 per IB student as government funding.
However, moving forwards, the government aims to push students towards taking “four or more A Levels” by cutting funding for IB students to achieve the “greatest value for money for the taxpayer”.
School leaders have condemned the decision as “educational vandalism”, alleging that it’ll shrink “opportunity and ambition for thousands of young people”.
The IB Schools and Colleges Association also said the decision was “deeply disheartening” as it creates “uncertainty for pupils, parents and staff”.
Moreover, concerns have been raised about the fact that IB Diplomas in the UK may become limited only to those who can afford a private education.
Without funding, many schools may find it difficult to offer the IB program as it requires smaller classes, more teaching hours, training costs and additional costs.
