IBC totes are a must have for any farmer, gardener, prepper, homeowner, renter, everyone! This is the most inexpensive yet extremely versatile and long lasting option for rainwater collection, storing liquid or dry goods, cultivating large scale microbes, fertilizers, JADAM pesticides, and so much more. I actually made an aquaponics system 9 years ago with IBC totes using the @murrayhallam design. So I've been a huge fan of this globally available product for quite some time. I just picked these up for $100 per 275gal food grade which is an incredible price these days. I think that's what I paid 9 years ago! Search online across all local oriented websites to find the best deal. ONLY BUY Food Grade and inquire about any previous use of the tote to be sure it had a safe product in it. Or buy new. If you don't have any rain water collection system yet I implore you to get one or two of these asap. How we built IBC tote grow beds inside our hoophouse using food-grade totes, gravel drainage, custom soil mix, rainwater catchment, and a programmable irrigation system.⁠ ⁠ We used 22 IBC totes, 9 per side as raised garden beds and 4 in the back to collect rainwater from gutters installed on the outside of the hoophouse. Each bed includes gravel for drainage, landscape fabric lining, and 2 feet of our own soil mix. Simple, quiet, and efficient. 2️⃣ Set the totes perfectly level Bury them on compacted gravel so they don’t shift. A tiny tilt can turn a smooth spill into a splashy mess (learned the hard way 😅). 3️⃣ Hide the plastic like a pro Build a wood frame and cover it with stone or wood cladding. Suddenly it looks like a designer feature, not a recycled container. 4️⃣ Create a clean overflow edge Use a smooth spillway so water sheets evenly instead of dribbling everywhere. 5️⃣ Keep the pump accessible Hide it well, but leave an easy access panel. Future you will be very thankful. 6️⃣ Finish with plants Grasses and moisture-loving plants soften the edges and make it feel intentional, not DIY. Relatable mistake: rushing the setup and wondering why the water never flows evenly 😬 Take your time, and this setup looks custom, runs smoothly, and stays low-maintenance for years.

Using only wood heat in the winter can be tough but we’ve found ways to make it easier. I found some used IBC totes for sale that had chemicals or other substances in them that we didn’t want to use for water. So, I came up with the idea of using the frames as firewood storage. It works great. I can bring the totes wherever I’m splitting wood and put it directly in and only have to stack once. I store the split wood in there until we need it and then haul it with the tractor up to the house. #regenerativeagriculture #farmlife #winter #firewoodstorage #livingofftheland

I was fortunate enough to get 40 IBC totes for free. Before you ask, yes I made sure they are all safe to use in the garden(food grade). We cut them in half and are going to use them as our raised beds for our garden. Each one will be about 13 square feet. We are only gonna use half this spring, but will continue to add more as the year progresses. It cuts pump use, saves energy, and gives you a reliable backup if your well, pump, or power ever fails. 🌻Here on The Wildlands, our off-grid homestead in Central Portugal, water security is everything — especially since we run a plant nursery. We store 16,000 liters in IBC totes, 70,000 liters in our pond, and another 50,000 liters in a water pillow. That’s 136,000 liters, or about 36,000 gallons, ready for the long, dry months ahead. Some folks say rainwater systems aren’t worth it if you already have a good well. But with droughts getting worse every year, I think depending on one water source is the real risk.
