Decode bigger words! Huge thanks to @imse_og for training my team to coach students through bigger words. As many of us know, Open and Closed Syllables are foundational units in nearly 75% of English syllables. This was a snapshot of a first grade group here working on the V/CV pattern. Open and Closed Syllables are a part of every scope and sequence in some capacity, particularly when students are taught that the vowel by itself is often the most common representation of that long sound. (i.e. “robot” “open” “arpron” “humid”). Also — @carlasiravoauthor and her husband @mikearchangelo created this viral song we are singing in this video. Students hold vowel cards. I say the short vowel sound. The student lifts the correct vowel It only takes a few minutes, but it gives students repeated practice hearing and identifying vowel sounds. Simple routines like this help build the automaticity students need for decoding and spelling. The @imse_og course has been fantastic. #structuredliteracy #scienceofreading #OrtonGillingham
