AMAs much as I was reluctant to leave Iceland, I’m glad that I happened to be in this country during the No Kings protest so I could march for six hours in San Diego with 80,000 beautiful, loving people against hate and ignorance.
The only violence I witnessed was a man on the sidewalk during the march angrily screaming his support for Trump. As I walked past him with my sign he yelled “speak English!” at the peaceful marchers waving Mexican flags. I stopped in my tracks, turned to him, and calmly asked, “how do you say “San Diego” in English?”.
He blinked rapidly at me for a few seconds and then, as his face purpled, threw his middle finger in my face and started screaming obscenities at me. I watched him calmly, shrugged, said “incorrect”, and kept marching. The only sense of danger I felt all day was because of that man. The rest of the day was about love, compassion, and community. That’s what we’re fighting for, and that’s what we have to remember today.
Turning off the comments on this because I am absolutely sick to death of the incredible and extreme cruelty of maga people here on insta. Never gotten so many death/harm threats in my life then when I publicly made a stand against hate. I know it’s exhausting, but stand strong against the tide. It has to ebb eventually.

AQIf you’ve been thinking “This isn’t the America I know”, then mark your calendar for Saturday, June 14th.
There’s a simple and very good reason this country feels so unfamiliar: our President and the Congressional electeds supporting him have decided that, the Constitution be damned, we only need one “branch” of government- Donald Trump. Republicans in Congress have given him free rein - or should we say reign? - to enrich himself at our expense and to act on his every impulse. Including spending $45 million in our tax dollars to throw himself a military birthday parade in DC on June 14th so that we can pay homage to him.
Enough already.
We the people, with the help of @indivisibleteam, @aclu_nationwide , @50501movement, @public_citizen and over 100 other groups, have instead declared June 14th NO KINGS DAY. And millions of us are gonna be on the streets in at least 1600 cities, in every state, waving our flags and non-violently reminding him and the members of Congress who are letting him run amuck that our founding fathers were real clear in 1776: America doesn’t do kings.
So go to nokings.org, find your nearest location, grab your tri-corn hat and your flag and hit the streets on Saturday. AND please spread the word - tell everyone you meet, share on FB, send an email, make some calls and invite your friends and family to join you.
To be clear, we need this to be completely nonviolent, a. cuz violence is not the point and b. cuz Trump would love an excuse to bring in the military. (I live in LA, so I know this as a fact.) If you want to be super safe, sign up for the ACLU’s “Know your rights” training Tuesday night.
