Hellgrammites are the larval form of a group of large winged insects known as dobsonflies (𝘊𝘰𝘳𝘺𝘥𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘥𝘢𝘦), which are notorious for their exceptionally large mandibles.
During their larval state, hellgrammites live like most larvae of other large winged insects, like dragonflies or damselflies, growing & developing underwater (sometimes for years). They’ll prey on small invertebrates, fish, or anything really that swims a little too close to wherever they may be bunkered down.
Hellgrammites are also extremely sensitive to pollution & poor water quality, meaning their presence in or around rivers is a positive sign of the overall health & quality of the water.

GWI could never be as stylish as this bug 😮💨 I have a question: Do they look more like boots or bell-bottom jeans?
This is Bitta alipes, a leaf-footed bug (family Coreidae). We spotted it at the Cartagena Botanical Garden in Colombia, and we were immediately stunned by its beautiful legs and its strange movements. Originally we thought he was dancing to impress a female, but it turns out that both males and females have these colorful hind legs. The dance must be some kind of defense mechanisms to confuse predators. The species is found in central and South America, from Costa Rica to Ecuador, with a couple observations in Bolivia.
Coreids are herbivores, usually feeding on seeds and fruit. Many species have what look like leaves on their hind legs, which led to their common name, leaf-footed bugs.

KETrying to catch a fly by hand is one thing. Trying to catch one by hand without injuring it is another. Horse flies definitely aren’t on most people’s good side, mainly due to the biting and bloodsucking nature of the females. Male horse flies however, much like male mosquitoes, don’t feed on blood, but instead feed on nectar, pollen, and plant juices. Like many other types of flies, male and female horse flies can be distinguished by the gap that separates their compound eyes. The females have a wide gap, while the gap on the males is very thin. Despite the many horse flies that I’ve handled, I’ve never been bitten by any of them! It seems as though they don’t use their bites defensively.
