Interoception is one of the eight sensory systems (alongside sight, sound, touch, taste, smell, vestibular, and proprioception) and it refers to the body’s internal sensory system—your ability to sense what’s happening inside your body. 🧠 What Does Interoception Help With? Interoception allows you to notice: Hunger or fullness Thirst Need to use the washroom Heart rate changes (e.g., from anxiety or excitement) Body temperature (hot or cold) Pain, nausea, or illness Muscle tension or relaxation Emotional states (like recognizing when you feel scared, sad, or happy) It's like having a built-in dashboard that tells you how your body is doing. --Interoception & Autism / Neurodivergence Many autistic and neurodivergent people experience interoceptive differences: Hypersensitivity: Over-aware of internal signals (e.g., minor pain feels overwhelming). Hyposensitivity: Under-aware of internal cues (e.g., not realizing they need to eat or use the bathroom). Difficulty linking sensations to emotions: May feel something in the body but not connect it to “I’m anxious” or “I’m excited.” This can impact: Emotional regulation Toileting Sleep Self-awareness Safety awareness (e.g., not realizing they’re overheating) How Can You Support Interoception? 1. Build Awareness Through Check-Ins: Use visuals or body charts to label what they’re feeling. Ask gentle questions like: “Is your tummy hungry or full?” or “Is your heart beating fast?” 2. Create Routines: Scheduled bathroom breaks, snack times, water reminders. Consistency helps when signals are hard to detect. 3. Use Body-Based Activities: Mindfulness, yoga, deep pressure, or movement to improve body connection. 4. This is something I really struggled with as a child. Interoception is our body’s way of recognizing internal sensations and emotions. It allows us to identify when we are hungry, sleepy, anxious, and more so that we can respond appropriately. At times, identifying these internal sensations can be challenging. Incorporating interoception-based activities would benefit children (and adults) to increase awareness in this area. As shown in this reel, body experiments focus on specific body parts by using movements/sensations to generate a response. We start furthest away from the body and work our way closer to our center and internal organs. Children are encouraged to express how their body feels after each experiment with descriptive words (ex: wiggly, relaxed). The more we experiment in different areas, the larger our collection of sensations grow. Interoception is your body’s way of telling your brain how you feel emotionally and physically. For many autistic people it is difficult to identify these things. For example, if their body is hungry and their stomach hurts. If their bladder is full and they need to go to the bathroom. If they are hot and they should take their sweater off. If their head hurts because they are overwhelmed by noise. So many things that we experience in life are guided by interoception, and not being able to identify specifics would feel so frustrating. Adding this folder to her AAC device is just one way to help in identifying what her body is feeling, why it feels that way, and what might support her body in that feeling. We’ve seen the progress of modeling these words because recently she has been able to identify that she wants to change clothes if they get wet. Sometimes I won’t realize she dripped water or stepped in a puddle, but several times now she has communicated that she wants to change because something feels wet. Interoception is the ability to be aware of internal sensations in the body, including heart rate, respiration, hunger, fullness, temperature, and pain, as well as emotion sensations. Interceptive signals play a crucial role in signaling hunger, fullness, and energy balance. Dysfunctional hunger signals may lead to cravings for comfort foods or a reliance on food as a source of emotional comfort, rather than satisfying physical hunger cues. Here we have a kiddo who has issues with going to the bathroom and doesn’t feel hungry. Our therapists have developed an activity plan as shown in this video. Activities like these activates the Interoception system as well as works on core muscles. 🧠 Interoception is the ability to sense what’s happening inside our bodies—like hunger, thirst, or a racing heart. The same way children may have issues processing sensory information from the external environment- they may also have difficulty processing info from various internal body systems that tell us when we’re hungry, thirsty, tired, need to urinate, scared, anxious ect. 🛜If children have trouble recognizing these signals they are obviously not going to be able to respond to them appropriately. When the nervous system illicits these “unanswered” cues it can breed anxiety and dysregulation. ‼️For children, understanding these internal signals is key to emotional regulation. Interoception is the foundation to emotional intelligence. 🫨When children can recognize their body’s cues, like a tight stomach when anxious or a fast heartbeat when excited, they’re better equipped to manage their emotions and reactions. Helping kids develop interoception skills can improve their self-awareness and emotional resilience.
