These are signs you are missing your body’s wisdom.. AKA you have faulty interoception You’re likely here because you’ve had a lot on your plate for a very long time. Interoception is the process by which your body communicates with your brain about 🤎 heart rate 🤎breathing 🤎pain 🤎temperature 🤎hunger 🤎thirst 🤎toileting 🤎intuition 🤎safety 🤎emotions 🤎bodily sensations And so much more… After times of prolonged stress or when your nervous system is dysregulated, research has shown there’s low interoception – meaning the messages are not transmitting from body to brain (Müller and Brand, 2022). If your brain is not receiving information about the state of your body, your brain perceives that the body is in a state of extreme stress and will keep you stuck in this disconnected state. This drives the lower centres of your brain to keep you feeling shut down, disconnected and dysregulated. Research has also shown there’s low interoception in depression, ADHD & autism - where the same mindbody pathway is impacted. One way to improve this is to practice interoception – i.e. to become aware of the feelings and sensations in your body. 🤎 🤎 🤎 Here’s how to wake up your mind-body connection – 1 - Build awareness of your nervous system. Set a timer to check-in with your body & it’s needs throughout the day 2 - Implement an APPROPRIATE & SPECIFIC somatic practice to wake up the mind-body connection If you’d like to learn to re-connect with your body’s natural wisdom & build your somatic toolkit, follow for updates to upcoming retreats, workshops & online programs 🤎 You can also check out my “embodied check in” by typing “Brianna Attard” into Insight Timer or Spotify 🤎

Understanding Interoception in Autism 🧠✨ Speaker: Dr. L. Vishnu Mental Health Occupational Therapist The Internal Connection 📝 Have you ever wondered why some children struggle to express hunger 🍎, pain 🤕, or the need for the restroom 🚽? In this video, we answer these questions by diving into Interoception, our "eighth sense" that signals what is happening inside our bodies. For many neurodivergent children, these internal signals-like a racing heart 💓 or muscle tension are often delayed or misunderstood. This gap between the brain and the body isn't just about physical needs; it is the foundation of emotional regulation 🎭. When a child cannot "feel" their internal state, they cannot manage their emotions, often leading to what looks like unexplained tantrums or hyperactivity 📉. How We Bridge the Gap 📍 To help children navigate these internal sensations, we utilize specific Occupational Therapy strategies that build a stronger brain-body bond: Understanding the "Why": Recognizing that irritability and crying are often reactions to unrecognized physical discomfort, such as bloating or heart rate changes 😫. Sensory Priority: Treating Interoception with the same importance as balance (Vestibular) and body position (Proprioception) ⚖️. Body Mapping & Awareness: Teaching the child to identify and locate physical sensations through visual maps 🗺️. Interoception Check-ins: Implementing regular pauses to help the child "scan" their body for cues ✅. Emotional & Body Cues: Training the child to link a physical sensation (like a tight stomach) to a specific emotion 🗣️. Active Regulation: Using movement and relaxation strategies to teach the child how to calm their internal systems 🤸‍♂️. The Consistency Factor: Emphasizing that progress comes through daily routine and persistence, not a one-time effort 🔄. I posted a reel about sensory seekers a few days ago, and in doing my research for that I learned lots of other stuff! So here’s another proprioception themed reel. 😅 As a reminder - proprioception is the sensory input we receive through our joints and muscles. It tells us about our body movements, and allows us to do things like go up stairs without looking, coordinate where your arms and legs go while getting be dressed, or ride a bike. Differences in how sensory input is received and processed is common with autism and other neurodivergencies (though it seems to be more extreme in autism than the other ones). Sensory seeking behaviors are only some of the signs of having low proprioception, but there are lots of other ones I never even thought about being in the same “family”. Like the fact that my 5 year old walking sounds like there’s an elephant in my house. Proprioceptive input is also one of the main regulators in the body, which means being low on proprioceptive input is going to lead to a pretty dysregulated state - trouble focusing and staying calm, being extra fidgety, extra trouble managing emotions. You aren’t going to be able to completely fix low proprioception permanently. But you can manage it throughout the day to help stay calm, focused, and regulated! Before doing something that involves a lot of sitting still and being quiet (school, religious service, long drive, etc), get in some proprioceptive input. You should also make sure to get some throughout the day, and even before bed! You can get proprioceptive input from: - Climbing - Running - Pushing, pulling, or carrying weighted objects - Hanging on monkey bars or from a trapeze - Jumping and crashing activities (trampoline, crash pad, etc) - Also more subtle things, like eating crunchy snacks, chewing gum, sucking on a lollipop or sucking thick liquid through a straw. - wear a compression shirt, weighted vest, or sit with a weighted blanket or stuffed animal in your lap Occupational therapy can also help with this! What’s your favorite way to get proprioceptive input? #sensoryseeker #sensoryseeking #autism #autismawareness #autismacceptance #autisticgirlsofinstagram

How to Capture Someone’s Attention and Keep It 🔥 Key Insights: ✨ Scarcity Effect: People value what they can’t easily have. The moment you become too available, their interest fades. Create space, and let their curiosity do the work. 🎭 Mystery & Contrast: Attraction thrives on unpredictability. A mix of warmth and detachment keeps the mind engaged—too much of either kills the spark. 🧠 Cognitive Biases at Play: The Zeigarnik Effect makes people obsess over unfinished interactions. A well-placed pause or an unanswered question lingers in their mind longer than constant validation. ⚠️ Strategies to Shift the Dynamic: ✔️ Control the Narrative: Let them wonder what’s on your mind instead of giving it all away. ✔️ Pace Your Responses: Don’t rush to reply—make interactions feel like a reward. ✔️ Be Unpredictable: Routine kills excitement. Keep them guessing, and they’ll keep coming back. #toxic #IntermittentReinforcement

Great question from the comment section on why neurotypical people think we can't interpret facial expressions... Well, we can't - in a neurotypical way. Sure, show us still pictures of facial expressions and we will probably struggle to interpret them in terms of emotions. But put a person in front of us and let us clock all of the little micro expressions that they have and the body language as one big WHOLE. That's where our intuitive skills shine 🌟 PS: To all of my sensitive followers out there, I apologize for the birdsong 😂🐦 #actuallyautistic #neurodivergent #autisticadult #trustyourgut #intuition
