From jagged mountains peaks to glaciers and icebergs, this by far the most spectacular place I have been to. 🐧 The island is not very big but it is one of the best places in the world for wildlife. It is home to numerous species of penguins, elephants seals, fur seals, albatross and many more 📆 Due to its remoteness it will take you multiple flights and days of navigation to get there. But trust me, this is one of the most incredible places it in the world and it is absolutely worth the effort and cost to get there. 🚢 The only way to reach the island is by boat. Palm Jumeirah — How the Artificial Island Was Built 🌴 Palm Jumeirah is one of the largest artificial islands ever created by humans. It was built in the sea off the coast of Dubai and shaped like a palm tree. 1. Planning and Design The project was developed by Nakheel. Engineers chose the palm-tree shape because it creates maximum beachfront property. Structure: Trunk – main road and residential area 17 Fronds – villa communities Crescent – outer breakwater protecting the island from waves 2. Land Creation (Sand Reclamation) Instead of concrete, engineers used natural sand from the Persian Gulf. Process: Dredging ships collected sand from the seabed. The sand was sprayed through pipes using a technique called rainbowing. GPS technology ensured the sand was placed accurately to form the palm shape. Facts: About 120 million cubic meters of sand used Enough to fill 2.5 million Olympic swimming pools 3. Rock Breakwater Protection To protect the island from ocean waves: A crescent-shaped breakwater was built. Made from 7 million tons of rock. The breakwater is about 11 km long. This prevents erosion and strong wave damage. 4. Land Compaction Loose sand cannot support buildings. Engineers used vibro-compaction: Long vibrating probes were pushed deep into the sand. This shook the sand and packed it tightly. This made the land strong enough for houses and hotels. 5. Construction of Roads & Buildings After the island was stable: Roads, bridges, and tunnels were built. The famous resort Atlantis The Palm was constructed at the tip of the crescent. Thousands of luxury villas and hotels followed.
