Interdental brushes have shown notably better effectiveness in reducing gingival inflammation and removing biofilm compared to floss. In fact, the latest Wilkins textbook even mentions that flossing should be reserved for areas where an interdental brush can’t fit (which they can fit pretty much anywhere) — because these brushes remove more biofilm and should be the proximal aid of choice. At the American Dental Hygienists’ Association meeting, I participated in the iTOP event with @curaproxusa and learned the two ideal brush sizes for my own mouth. When using them, if it feels just a little too snug, insert it through the mesial, then angle it diagonally like an “X,” and pull through the distal. One gentle pass per contact covers more surface area than multiple floss passes. In 2025, I (Shelley) was invited to an iTOP event, and honestly, I wasn’t even sure what that meant or what I was missing. What I walked into was hours of deep, evidence-based oral hygiene education, the history behind homecare, the research, and hands-on instruction in a small group setting. I learned how to better address proximal surfaces, how to customize oral hygiene for each patient, and how to use different tools intentionally, not generically. It was a career-changing experience. @curadenusa now offers a condensed iTOP experience specifically for students, and I recently had it brought into my classroom. The feedback was clear, students loved the hands-on learning, felt more confident teaching homecare, and felt better equipped to empower patients to improve their oral health. This is how we develop future prevention specialists, not just clinicians who repeat instructions.
