GIJacee Lee Dugard è stata rapita l’11 giugno 1991, all’età di 11 anni, davanti alla sua casa a South Lake Tahoe, in California. Il rapitore, Phillip Garrido, un ex detenuto per stupro, e sua moglie, Nancy Garrido, la portarono via con la forza mentre aspettava l’autobus scolastico. Jacee fu tenuta prigioniera per 18 anni in una serie di capannoni e tende nel cortile di casa Garrido, a 160 chilometri dal luogo del rapimento. Durante la prigionia, Jacee fu ripetutamente abusata sessualmente da Garrido, che la costrinse a vivere in condizioni disumane. A soli 14 anni, diede alla luce la prima di due figlie, nate dagli abusi. Le due figlie di Jaycee Lee Dugard vissero in isolamento, crebbero in capannoni e tende nel cortile di casa Garrido, senza contatti con il mondo esterno, senza frequentare la scuola e con una visione distorta della realtà. Garrido e sua moglie manipolarono psicologicamente Jacee e le sue figlie, convincendole che il mondo esterno era pericoloso e che Garrido era un “messaggero di Dio”. Il caso venne alla luce nell’agosto 2009, quando Garrido si presentò in un ufficio dell’FBI con le due figlie di Jacee, suscitando sospetti. Le indagini portarono alla scoperta di Jacee, che fu finalmente liberata. Garrido e sua moglie furono arrestati. Phillip Garrido si dichiarò colpevole di rapimento e stupro e fu condannato a 431 anni di carcere. Nancy Garrido, riconosciuta come complice, ricevette una condanna a 36 anni di prigione. Jacee Lee Dugard ha scritto un libro, “A Stolen Life”, per condividere la sua storia e aiutare altri sopravvissuti.
