Woad 💜 Woad has been used as a natural dye for thousands of years, and it is only within the recent century that we have replaced these natural, non-toxic dyes with harsher pigments. It has become a worldwide issue in the fashion industry, with the famous yearly event of telling what colour is in season by looking at the dye left in the rivers in India. The documentary @letthembenaked by eco-fashion pioneer Jeff Garner highlights these issues and aims to show us how we can sustainably produce high-quality fashion solely using natural materials. I met up with Jeff in the Cotswolds back in June, where we coloured this medieval style hemp-silk dress with fresh woad leaves. The process was incredibly simple, and at no stage were we concerned about any negative impacts from the natural pigment. We were even able to dye this dress without the need for gloves or a mask! Woad is one of the oldest known natural dyes, dating back as far as the early stone age. Cultures all over the world have utilised its natural pigment to colour fabrics. Famously, the Celts used it to colour their clothing blue/purple. Blue was a ritual colour for the Celtic people, and it is widely believed that they tattooed themselves with the dye from woad plants.
