DIOur Lady of Saidnaya Monestary in Sednaya, Syria was founded by emperor Justinian in 547 AD. In it, you will find a depiction of him, his wife Theodora, and the Virgin Mary, as he was said to have a vision of her and being ordered to build the church there in her name. It was inscribed in Arabic, reflecting the local language, as well as the multi ethnic identities of Orthodoxy as a whole. It has since become a pilgrimage site for many Orthodox Christians from the Middle Ages, until today.

It wasn’t until the reign of Justinian I that thoughts turned to “renovatio imperii” or the restoration of the Empire. The Eastern Romans still referred to their empire as “Imperium Romanum” (Roman Empire) and to themselves as “Roman”.
Justinian ruled over the Roman Empire from 527 to 565 AD. His rule constitutes a distinct epoch in the history of the Later Roman empire that has left an enduring legacy today.
Dubbed “the emperor who never sleeps”, Justinian reformed the Roman tax and judicial systems, expanded the Empires borders across the Mediterranean and Africa, repelled invading nations and blossomed a golden age in art, literature and architecture. These successes were notably thanks to Justinian’s choosing of highly efficient, but unpopular advisers for state roles and the support of his wife Theodora.
But despite his successes, Justinian knew that his Empire was missing the very thing that makes it Roman… It was missing Rome….
In the year 534 AD, the Romans under the command of General Belisarius had recovered the lost North African provinces taken by the Vandals from the Western Empire. Belisarius returned to Constantinople with the Vandals’ royal treasure to enjoy a triumph, while Africa was formally restored to imperial rule.
Belisarius first landed in Sicily which saw little resistance to the Byzantine conquest. From there, preparations were made for an invasion of Italy by Sea. General Mundus, who commanded the forces in Illyricum led his forces into Dalmatia by land and took the capital, Salona.
In the late spring of 536 AD,Belisarius crossed with his invasion force of just 7,500 men into Italy and captured Rhegium. City after city began to fall until finally, in December of that year Rome was once again under Roman control.

MEYou open a reel expecting something about the Guptas, Cholas, maybe the Delhi Sultanate. Fine. Instead it’s some Indian history creator narrating it like the Fall of Rome with dramatic Belisarius-style Byzantine war music in the background. Why? Why does every medieval Indian event suddenly sound like Justinian just sent his general to reconquer North Africa? We have thousands of years of our own history, aesthetics, and cultural memory. Yet somehow every reel turns into a low-budget Roman Empire edit. At this point I’m just sitting there watching it with increasing irritation, wondering who convinced everyone that Indian history needs Byzantine background music to feel epic.

CRIn 565 AD, Constantinople was the capital of the Byzantine Empire under Justinian I. It was one of the largest and wealthiest cities in the world, serving as the administrative, military, and religious center of imperial power.
The city was protected by the Theodosian Walls, a layered defensive system that had repelled multiple invasions since the 5th century. Its harbors along the Golden Horn were crowded with merchant ships trading grain from Egypt, silk from the East, and spices and luxury goods from across the Mediterranean and Near East.
The skyline was dominated by the recently rebuilt Hagia Sophia, completed in 537 after the Nika Revolt. Its massive dome symbolized imperial authority and Christian orthodoxy, reflecting Justinian’s involvement in both governance and theology. For nearly a thousand years, it remained the largest cathedral in the Christian world, until the construction of Seville Cathedral in the 16th century.
The Hippodrome functioned as a major public arena for chariot races and political demonstrations. Nearby, the Great Palace housed the imperial court and state administration, overseeing territories that had recently expanded westward through the campaigns of Belisarius in North Africa and Italy.
By 565, Constantinople stood at the center of a temporarily restored Roman imperial structure. Justinian died later that year, marking the end of one of the most ambitious periods of expansion and legal reform in Byzantine history.

Bizans İmparatoriçesi Theodora (495-548), mütevazı bir aileden gelmesine karşın imparatoriçeliğe kadar yükselip ülkesine damgasını vurmayı başarmıştır. Ayı terbiyecisi babasının ve dansçı annesinin yolundan giderek ergenlik çağlarında sahneye çıkmış, günümüzde o yaşlardaki bir kız için asla düşünülemeyecek gösterilerin içinde yer almış, böylece şehrin önde gelen erkekleriyle tanışarak adım attığı iktidar yolu onu, tahtın veliahtı ve sonrasında sahibi Jüstinyen ile evliliğe kadar götürmüştür.
