You might not love hearing this, but here’s the honest truth from thousands of selective college applications I’ve reviewed and developed over 15+ years college coaching: Even families who swear they’re aiming for targets usually end up with 8 out of 10 schools on their first list being either reaches or far‑reaches once we run the data. So this applies. I’m not saying it’s right! But it’s the trends we see out here. We can’t help but have big dreams for ourselves and we should! But that means there’s work to be done (and things to stop doing) to make it a possiblity. Independent and special projects are pure gold in admissions. Showing up for ONLY school‑sponsored clubs or “because it looks good” won’t distinguish you in this process—it just blends you into a crowd of sameness. But designing your own project or going deep into what excites you with an indepedent study — I wish someone had inspired me to do things way beyond what I thought was possible. #katestonecollegecoaching #greenwichct #darienct #katestone #collegeadmissions #collegeprep #college #collegecoach

Are you starting to catch on? In college admissions, what’s easy to accomplish ends up sounding common and, honestly, is kinda forgettable. What’s really hard to do is exciting to read about. It’s memorable. It leaves an impression on your admissions reader. “Whoa. I’m really impressed that this student was able to accomplish this.” That level of commitment is rare. A real passion project isn’t going to be taking the obvious road or the shortcut (sorry). It’s likely to involve 6–12 months of focused work that addresses a real problem, demonstrates learning, and provides proof through results. Are you ready to join our Fall student cohort? When archeologists don’t know an artifact’s purpose, they often chalk it up to ritual, giving meaning to something potentially completely meaningless. A year ago I found some goat vertebrae and brought them home with me because I thought they were beautiful. Such complex shapes. A string of bad luck ensued. This year, after drawing them over and over - a kind of ritual in itself - I returned them to the grave I robbed, imagining that it might turn my luck around. The location was covered in goat shit this time - like they had been visiting their lost friend. It was hard to return the bones - meaningless things that for some stupid reason had become so meaningful to me. Hard especially to leave them in such an unromantic setting. But I suppose that’s the lesson. All things return to the earth. Nothing is precious. Things need to be where they belong even if it’s covered in poop.
