PRThe world’s only alpine parrot, kea are unique to Aotearoa New Zealand. These smart and inquisitive birds nest on the ground, which makes them vulnerable to introduced predators.
They’re often seen at at @trebleconenz where @real.newzealand run their Predator Free Maunga trapping programme.

NEOne of the more fascinating parts of kea behaviour is what happens once they leave the nest. Juvenile kea don’t disperse quietly into the mountains, they form loose, chaotic social groups often described as “gangs.”
These groups typically form when young birds, usually between one and four years old, gather in areas rich in food or human activity. They’re highly inquisitive, far bolder than adults, and far more likely to experiment with anything new.
Young kea learn much of their problem-solving behaviour socially. Within these groups they watch, mimic, and copy one another’s interactions with objects, people, and their environment. Studies have shown that when one bird learns a technique, others in the group quickly pick it up, whether that’s opening pack zips, flipping roof racks, or working together to lift heavy items.
These gangs aren’t territorial in the way adult breeding pairs are. Instead, they roam widely across valleys and alpine basins, sometimes travelling long distances in a matter of days.
It’s an amazing feature of kea social structure, that highly intelligent, highly social juveniles navigate the world in groups. Much like toddlers they boundaries, and learn through exploration. It’s part of what makes the species so remarkable, and wonderful to observe.
