Sugary drinks, packed with high-fructose corn syrup, trigger a surge in uric acid production during fructose metabolism in the liver. High levels of uric acid lead to hyperuricemia, which causes oxidative stress in the kidneys and can result in the formation of painful urate crystals. Furthermore, the insulin spike from sugar forces the kidneys to reabsorb more sodium, increasing blood pressure and putting mechanical strain on the delicate glomerulus—the kidney’s internal filter.  In contrast, lemon water provides a protective biological advantage by increasing levels of urinary citrate. Citrate binds to calcium in the urine, preventing it from bonding with oxalates to form the most common type of kidney stones. This process, known as chelation, effectively keeps minerals dissolved so they can be flushed out safely.
