GR#neolithic | Tomb of the Deer people? A 5000 year old Stone Age cairn
The Knowe of Yarso is one of my favourite Stone Age sites to visit while in Orkney. Like the ‘tomb of the eagles’, ‘tomb of the otters’ and Cuween burial chamber, the people of Yarso seems to have had some form of connection to an animal, that was seemingly so strong that they felt the necessity to bury this animal along with their own dead. The bones of 36 red deer were found along site the 29 humans buried inside the cairn. There were purposeful deposits too, not unfortunate and lost wondering animals who got stuck. This attachment to a specific animal isn’t unseen elsewhere on Orkney, for example, Cuween burial chamber on the main island held the skulls of 24 ‘collie’ like dogs.
Online you’ll see suggestions for and against the idea that these animals represented tribal symbols, or ‘totems’. It’s also possible that these animals were simply ‘important’ to the users of the tomb, perhaps the people of Yarso were red deer hearder’s, and the most impressive of their beasts were deemed worthy of burial? What do you think? We’re these animals ‘totem’ or more ‘functional’ to the Neolithic communities?
