🐋✨ Un espiral de burbujas… y uno de los espectáculos más increíbles de la naturaleza y de mi vida. En las frías aguas de la Antártida, las ballenas jorobadas desarrollaron una estrategia de caza casi perfecta: el “bubble-net feeding” o red de burbujas. Nadando en espiral bajo el agua, liberan aire por su espiráculo y crean una cortina de burbujas que funciona como una trampa. El krill queda concentrado en el centro y, en un instante sincronizado, las ballenas emergen desde abajo con la boca abierta para capturarlo. Es una técnica compleja, cooperativa y extremadamente eficiente para concentrar millones de pequeños crustáceos en un solo punto. Lo más impresionante es que esto no es solo instinto: es aprendizaje y cooperación. Algunas ballenas coordinan el movimiento mientras otras crean la red de burbujas, formando una verdadera coreografía submarina. Todo ocurre porque en el verano antártico el océano se llena de krill, el alimento que sostiene a ballenas, pingüinos, focas y gran parte de la vida del océano Austral. Climate change is catalyzing rapid alterations to the Antarctic and Southern Ocean ecosystems. It’s time to step up, and at the 42nd Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR), three proposed marine protected areas await action. On this global stage, delegates from around the world convene to assess the current state of the region’s ecosystems and offer changes to their existing conservation strategy. Earlier this week, the CCAMLR scientific committee released their Marine Ecosystem Assessment for the Southern Ocean Summary for Policymakers. Wherein the experts concluded, “Strategies for conserving Southern Ocean marine biodiversity, including management of fisheries, need to be further developed, based on current knowledge of the implications of climate change, to ensure resilience of Southern Ocean ecosystems into the future.” We urge the delegates to act in accordance with the committee’s recommendations, not only to ensure the success of the Antarctic and the Southern Ocean’s habitats but also for the global ocean, whose prosperity is tied to the region. Antarctica and the Southern Ocean bear the weight of our ocean’s future with their influence on global atmospheric and water temperatures, nutrient cycling, and food availability.
