Huge thanks to my boys in @tenthavenuenorth & to @natalielaynemusic We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, we’ve prayed, we’ve worshipped, we’ve lamented and we’ve praised. There’s a lot of space to encounter when we are willing to weep with those who weep and rejoice with those who rejoice. This question though. How do we lament and not wallow? “Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us. Selah” ‭‭-Psalm‬ ‭62‬:‭8‬ Pour out your heart to the Lord. Do we? Can’t help but wonder if the trust and the refuge are what make lament possible, or if they’re the byproducts of pouring our hearts out. Either way, they are connected. May we not shy away from bringing all that is in our heart. May we pour it all out on Jesus. He welcomes it because He can take it. In fact, He already took it. And I’m quite convinced He’ll take it again. #lament #concert #tourthoughts

Sometimes demonstration is the best teacher. I don’t just preach lament, I practice it. For those that still don’t understand, let me be clear - lament is not just a complaining session or a temper tantrum. It is an appeal to God based on confidence in His character (NT Wright). It is the way in which God has designed us to “cast our cares on Him” (1 Peter 5:7). It is how we invite God into the dark crevices of our hearts and worship Him there. Through biblical study, I’ve outlined 5 critical steps to lament well. 1. Center God. If you skip this, you’re not lamenting biblically. You’re doing something all together different. To lament biblically, you must start with God by acknowledging His character and then asking that it be made evident in your situation. 2. Name it. Yes, God knows but do you? 3. Feel it. This is where we (read: I) tend to hide. I don’t want to spiral, so I try to stay neutral. But “whatever doesn’t come up and out of your mouth through words will come up and out of your body through actions” (Tim Ross). 4. Inquire About It. God may have instructions for you or might speak through someone else. Open the ears of your heart. 5. Surrender It. Lay it down and truly let God handle it. *And after you pick it up again lol start over! This prayer can be 2 minutes or 2 hours. Spend time in each section and watch God’s perfect strength show up in your weakness.

The Bible shows us that lament is not weakness - it’s His design for restoring the soul. David lamented. Jeremiah lamented. Even Jesus wept. True lament isn’t wallowing; it’s releasing what’s heavy so God can fill the space with His peace. Emotions are "energy in motion" and they need output 🙏 and that is all part of God's design: 💧 Tears flush stress hormones from our bodies. 💧 They trigger endorphins—God’s natural pain relievers. 💧 Honest expression helps guard against depression. 💧 Healthy lament regulates the nervous system, signalling to our brain: you are safe. 💧 It opens our souls to God’s touch, making space for Him to heal hidden wounds. Telling someone to skip lament can keep them stuck 🚨 But when we bring our grief honestly to God, we find both the science of healing and the Spirit’s comfort working together. In memory of all who lost their lives, the United States Air Force Strings present George Walker's "Lyric for Strings". Originally titled "Lament", this piece was conceived as the second movement of Walker's String Quartet No. 1, which he wrote in 1946 during his graduate studies at the Curtis Institute of Music. . Walker dedicated the work to his grandmother, Melvina King, who died shortly before the work's completion. She lived a life tinged with sorrow, resilience, and hope - emotions that are deeply intertwined in Walker's work.
