Babies speaking “gibberish” is actually a very important stage of language development called babbling. It usually begins around 4–6 months of age and becomes more complex between 7–12 months. During this stage, babies produce sounds like “ba-ba,” “da-da,” “ga-ga,” or long streams of mixed sounds that may seem meaningless to adults. However, scientists studying Linguistics and Developmental Psychology have found that this “gibberish” is actually the brain practicing the mechanics of speech. When babies babble, they are learning how to control their tongue, lips, vocal cords, and breathing to produce the sounds used in real language. Their brains are also analyzing the speech they hear around them and experimenting with similar sound patterns. Research shows that babies from different cultures initially produce very similar babbling sounds, but as they grow and listen to the language spoken around them, their babbling gradually begins to reflect the rhythm and sound patterns of their native language. Another fascinating fact is that babies often use intonation (the rise and fall of pitch) in their babbling long before they know actual words. For example, a baby might babble in a way that sounds like a question or an excited statement. This shows that they are not only learning individual sounds but also the musical patterns of communication. By the time babies reach around 12 months, their babbling starts transitioning into recognizable words, meaning all that “gibberish” was actually a critical rehearsal phase for real speech. Studies also show that babies who babble more frequently and receive responsive interaction from caregivers often develop stronger language skills later in childhood, because conversation—even with babbling—helps strengthen the neural pathways responsible for communication. 👶🧠🗣️ #viralvideo #baby #mom #momlife #dad

This bilingual family shares their journey, tips, and real-life experiences of raising a bilingual child. If you’re into language learning or bilingual parenting, be sure to check out their account @korea.america.family “Won’t two languages confuse them?” Nope. But you know what is confusing? That this myth is still around. As a pediatrician, I hear this fear a lot, especially from parents who are trying to hold onto their culture, speak their home language, or raise kids in multilingual households. The idea that bilingualism causes speech delays or “mixes up” a toddler’s brain? Just not true. Yes, your child might use fewer words per language at first, but when we zoom out and count all the words they’re exposed to and using (including signs and approximations), their total language skills are often right on track. Mixing languages isn’t a red flag. It’s actually a bilingual brain doing exactly what it’s supposed to do: using all the tools it’s been given. If you’re raising your child in more than one language, you’re not confusing them. You’re giving them a gift. Want to learn what actually causes language delays-and what’s just outdated advice? There’s a reason babies respond so strongly to this way of speaking — and it’s not because it’s “cute.” Decades of research, including work from Harvard’s Center on the Developing Child, shows that babies learn language through responsive, back-and-forth interaction with adults. The tone, rhythm, and timing of parentese help make those interactions easier for babies to join. What matters most isn’t sounding “grown-up.” It’s creating moments where babies can: ✨ tune in ✨ take turns ✨ use their voice ✨ and learn that communication goes both ways That’s why cooing, gooing, and vocal play are such an important part of early language development — they’re practice for real conversation. If you’re talking to your baby face-to-face, slowing down, and responding when they make a sound, you’re already supporting their speech and language development in a meaningful way. This isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing what babies’ brains are wired for. Hi 👋 I’m Melissa, speech therapist and mom of 3. I train parents to get their toddlers talking at home. Learn a Language Before You’re Born? #science #languagelearning #babies #development It’s interesting that babies don’t wait to start learning - they learn before they are born. Also they don’t learn vocabulary or grammar in the womb, they do pick up on cadence and rhythmic patterns of their parent’s native language, and then demonstrate a preference for those linguistic qualities on the very first day they are born. For more details and methodology, check out the August 2025 paper from Andréanne René et al: “Prenatal linguistic exposure shapes language brain responses at birth”

Explained 👇 Wait time: giving your toddler several seconds to process and respond. Toddlers need extra processing time. What may feel like a long pause is actually normal thinking time for them. Using appropriate wait time is very important for the development of expressive language. If you jump in and answer for them right away, you are taking away their opportunity to practice the thought process. 📖 Book reading provides many opportunities to practice wait time. ⏱️ wait 5-10 seconds after asking a question, pointing, or reading a line. Even a small attempt like pointing, making a sound, or a one word answer counts as communication. 👏 Make sure to celebrate their effort and repeat what language they attempted to use. What happens when you pause: •toddlers are more likely to attempt words or gestures •they practice 2-way conversation •they practice forming sentences instead of relying on an adult to speak for them •they build confidence and independence #earlychildhooddevelopment #toddlermilestones #languagedevelopment #expressivelanguage #waittime

We started baby sign language early - not to rush speech, but to give her a way to communicate before words fully arrived. And the difference has been incredible. At 13 months, she can tell me what she needs instead of crying. Milk. More. All done. Help. Eat. Please. Thank you. That means less frustration, more confidence, and a baby who feels understood. If you’re wondering how to start, it’s simpler than most people think. Pick just one or two high-frequency words like milk or more. Every time you say the word out loud, do the sign at the same time, consistently and slowly. No drills, no pressure. Just repetition during real moments (mealtimes are perfect). They’ll watch for a few days… and then one day, they sign it back 🥹 Research shows baby sign language can support: • early communication skills • stronger language development later on • improved memory and attention • problem-solving and cognitive flexibility It isn’t about making her smarter - it’s about giving her growing brain tools to express itself. When babies realize their actions have meaning, you can almost see the lightbulb go on. That cause-and-effect understanding is huge for brain development. And the bonus? More connection. More calm. More moments like this instead of tears. If you’re on the fence, consider this your sign 🤍 Communication builds confidence- even before words. Save this for later or share with a parent who’s curious about baby sign language.

Hi, I’m a speech therapist & a mom! 🩷 Did you know that sign language helps with language development? Sign language increases receptive language (language we understand) by pairing actions to words! Babies can use sign language before they are able to speak words. Here are the first 10 signs to teach your baby! You can start as early as you want! Babies typically sign back to you around 10-12 months! 👶🏼 What other signs would you like to know? #babysigns #signlanguage #speechtherapy #speechtherapist #MomLife

This looks like I am doing less for my toddler. I am actually teaching him to communicate. As a pediatric SLP, I intentionally do not anticipate every need. I give just enough and then I pause. That pause creates a reason to communicate. More. Help. Open. Again. I stay close, responsive, and supportive. The goal is not frustration. The goal is showing my toddler that communication works. This is called creating communication opportunities and it is one of the simplest ways to support language at home without flashcards or pressure. Follow for realistic speech and communication tips you can actually use with your toddler. #pediatricslp #toddlercommunication #languagedevelopment
