To work on getting a strong sound and clear articulation in the low register here are three exercises to try!

1. 30 second long tones: Yeah, it’s what it sounds like 😬 BUT you need to work in a specific way. Play non vibrato and find a strong sound. Find different tone colors. Experiment with air direction, air speed, volume of air, and embouchure shape. THEN, once you find a good sound try to stop the note and articulate. Do it as an isolated articulation and also as repeated long articulations.
2. Expanding interval exercise: Find the expanding interval exercise in your De La Sonorite book and go to the one with the repeated low D’s. Play this with intervals slurring down to the D. Then play it starting on the D and slurring up to the other notes. Then play it all articulated. (Finally: play it as written all slurred)
3. Moyse exercise #12: this one is too much to explain in the caption, but basically find a low register melody/exercise and play with “ha”. No tongue just soul crushingly difficult ha’s 😉

BEI got asked a lot during my recent USA tour about how I am able to “play so big” ( = open my sound), so I decided to experiment today because there’s nothing like trying to open your sound when you have the flu 🤧
When I think of an open sound I think of 2 things:
•Round sound 😮
•Projecting sound ✈️
I like to think of a round O (like a “hot potato 🥔 “) in the back of my throat and an E in the front of my mouth which, paired with the air collected inside my cheeks, helps me to have better projection.

Aunque estrenada por primera vez en 1805 en Viena, esta fue revisada en 1806 y 1814 demostrando las grandes dificultades que tuvo Beethoven para llegar a su versión final (en la actualidad, las dos primeras versiones se suelen representar bajo el título de Leonore).

La deslumbrante mezzo-soprano Christa Ludwig, nacida en Berlín en 1929 es ampliamente reconocida como una de las mejores voces del siglo XX, dejando grabaciones de referencia de casi todos los grandes autores del repertorio alemán. Falleció en 2021.

Aquí la vemos en el rol titular de la ópera, cuya trama gira alrededor de Leonora, una mujer que se disfraza de hombre para liberar a su esposo injustamente encarcelado.
