Leopards are built for almost everything. Vertical stone walls? Less so. This 5–6 month old cub had fallen into a deep well, very much alive and uninjured, but entirely at the mercy of physics. The mother was present around.. watchful, anxious, and waiting. The Forest Department and our RESQ CT team got there in time. The retrieval protocol is one we know well: a cage lowered with precision, the animal guided in calmly, a surface assessment, and release once all vitals check out. Routine in process, never routine in feeling. Open wells remain one of the most silent and preventable killers of wildlife in rural Maharashtra. Every rescue like this one is also a reminder of how much work remains in community awareness and structural mitigation. Maharashtra Forest Department x RESQ CT

We welcome 20 leopards from Junnar into carefully prepared spaces at Vantara, where our teams are ready to provide expert veterinary care and long-term support. ♥️🐆 Many arrive with self-inflicted wounds caused by capture and confinement. Their recovery will go far beyond physical treatment. With equal focus on their mental and emotional wellbeing, our teams will work patiently to rebuild strength, stability, and instinct. Because this is not just relocation. This is rehabilitation. 🌳✨ [junnar, junnar leopards, rescue mission, rehabilitation, maharashtra, forest department, wildlife, wild animals, every life matters, vantara]

Yesterday evening at 4:20 PM, we received a call that a leopard had been struck by an unidentified vehicle on the Chandrapur–Mul highway near Mamla. Our team Habitat Conservation Society rushed to the scene without delay. Working in close coordination with the Forest Department, we immediately initiated a rapid rescue operation. After the impact, the leopard had retreated into the dense jungle for safety. Locating the animal in the fading light proved extremely challenging, but through persistent and coordinated efforts, we were able to find it. Once the leopard was located, it was safely tranquilized. As soon as it was unconscious, we conducted an immediate medical assessment before transporting it to the Transit Treatment Centre (TTC) in Chandrapur for further care. #habitatconservationsociety #wildlifeprotection #wildlifeconservation #wildlifecorridors #savewildlife

At Vantara, our work goes beyond providing a safe home for leopards rescued from conflict and confinement in cages. While we ensure lifelong care and dignity for those that cannot return to the wild, we also support science-based solutions such as stronger monitoring and surveillance, AI-enabled tools to protect human life, coexistence programmes for communities living alongside leopards, and responsible leopard population management measures to help people and leopards share the same landscapes more safely. 🏡💚✨ [junnar, junnar leopards, wildlife, wild animals, new home, every life matters, vantara]

At Vantara, every life matters, and every life is treated with dignity. While protecting leopards in the wild, safeguarding their natural habitats, and supporting coexistence between humans and leopards remains deeply important, we are equally committed to the wellbeing of those already captured and living in cages. For these 20 leopards, that commitment meant action, time, expertise, planning, space, resources, and lifelong care, because true care is not just about shelter, but about ensuring every animal receives the respect, dignity, and quality of life they deserve. For these 20 leopards, that commitment has made a meaningful difference, and we are proud to say that we made a difference to their lives. ❤️✨ [junnar, junnar leopards, mission, wildlife, wild animals, every life matters, vantara]

The situation at the forest department nursery in Vadgaon Sawtal, Ahilyanagar, is a heartbreak that cannot be ignored. For over three months, 21 leopards have been confined to cramped, suffocating cages. These majestic animals are in a dying state. Due to the extreme heat, foul smells, and constant congestion, they are hitting the bars in distress, causing themselves further injury. Two leopards have already died, and another is currently fading away. Our heritage teaches us "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam"-the world is one family. This sacred philosophy does not just apply to humans; it encompasses every living soul. When we imprison these creatures in such inhumane conditions, we are failing our role as guardians of this global family. To ignore their suffering is to ignore a part of ourselves. The Reality on the Ground: 3 Months of imprisonment in nursery cages. Zero Movement due to cramped, inadequate spacing. Rising Temperatures making hot cages a death trap. These leopards deserve dignity and relocation to a proper facility, not a slow death in a cage. We cannot stay silent while our wildlife is treated with such neglect. We call upon the authorities to intervene immediately before more lives are lost. @mahaforestofficial @petaindia @peta @cmomaharashtra_ @adityathackeray Video Credits : @earthandalley

In recent months, Vantara’s efforts to capture and relocate leopards from Maharashtra have ignited a debate among conservationists and environmental activists. While these initiatives are publicly promoted as wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, critics contend that the growing removal of leopards from their natural habitats could inadvertently undermine ecological protections and benefit industries such as illegal mining. Leopards, particularly the Indian Leopard, play a vital role in maintaining the balance of forest ecosystems. As apex predators, they regulate prey populations and contribute to biodiversity. Their presence is also crucial for enforcing environmental regulations, as areas that host protected species typically face stricter scrutiny regarding development and land use. The controversy arises from the potential repercussions of relocating leopards. Activists argue that removing these animals can diminish the perceived ecological significance of their habitats, making it easier for development activities to proceed without facing rigorous environmental assessments. This concern is amplified in regions already influenced by mining interests, where the lack of documented wildlife could facilitate regulatory approvals for damaging projects. Moreover, illegal mining poses a persistent threat in various parts of Maharashtra, particularly in areas where forested regions rich in minerals coincide with wildlife habitats. The presence of wildlife complicates the acquisition of environmental clearances, but relocating these species may weaken those ecological barriers. Consequently, some conservationists question the motives behind frequent leopard captures, fearing they may inadvertently support the objectives of illegal mining networks and undermine important conservation efforts.. . . Would you pause your harvest for leopard cubs? 🐆🌾 This farmer did for 3 days! Durlabh Patel (72), a farmer from Bodavank village in Chikhli taluka of Navsari district, Gujarat, stopped harvesting his two-bigha sugarcane field after labourers spotted three leopard cubs hidden inside a shelter made of sugarcane bushes. The cubs were about 15 days old and had not yet opened their eyes. Patel halted work for three days, asked the 10 labourers to wait, and still paid them their wages. He also informed the Chikhli Forest Department, after which a team of officials and wildlife experts from Navsari Agricultural University, led by Dr Navaz Dahya, installed cameras to track the mother leopard. Footage later showed the mother leopard returning and carrying away the cubs one by one over two days. Harvesting resumed on the fourth day after the cubs were safely moved. Patel was later felicitated by the Astral Foundation of Ahmedabad for his action. #WildlifeIndia #HumanityFirst #Leopard #NatureCoexistence #IndiaStories
