Here’s the thing no one warns you about: getting diagnosed is just the beginning. Most women hear “lipedema” and then... nothing. No roadmap. No real plan. Just “surgery when you’re ready” and a pat on the back. I refused to accept that. When I got my diagnosis, I had 4 kids at home. Toddlers. There was no “take 6 weeks to recover from surgery” in my world. No one was going to handle school drop-offs and midnight wake-ups while I healed. So I became obsessed with finding another way. Weird signs I had lipedema before I was diagnosed… For the longest time, I couldn’t explain the kind of pain I had, because it didn’t feel like “normal” workout soreness. Now that I know what I was dealing with, it all makes so much sense 🥲 There were typically two types of pain for me: 1️⃣ Felt like deep, dull growing pains that never fully went away. I thought it meant I was just training too hard or not recovering well… but nope 🙃 that was lipedema tissue As my inflammation increased, so did what I called “joint pain” — especially in my hips. But here’s the weird part… it didn’t feel like bone, muscle, or even the joint itself. It felt like it lived in the tissue. Which, looking back, was a huge red flag I’d also get these charley-horse-style cramps — but again, not in the muscle. More crampy and deep in the tissue instead of that classic muscle knot 2️⃣ The acute flare-up pain (after certain foods, heat, or long days on my feet) By night, my legs would feel insanely tight, heavy, and swollen like my calves could literally burst 😭 Felt like Tree-trunk legs and that my Shoes felt like they were filled with lead… And my “problem areas” (hello saddle bags) would HURT — especially during side-lying leg work. 30 years struggling with (what I now know is) lipedema, I’ve gotten really good at hiding my legs. At 13, I was called “tree trunk ankles,” and that was the last time I wore shorts. Maxi dresses, flowy pants, flared jeans (thank god skinny jeans are finally out of fashion!!)… these have been my savior. My comfort. So when I started posting my legs on here, some of my friends were really surprised I’ve been struggling. There have been no negative comments; and connecting with so many of you who have experienced this same bullying and shame, and have been hiding behind these same garments… I feel so much less alone. Sorry for the angle… there is no good angle to show this point 🤣 If you experience swelling in your legs, feet, cold feet, cellulite, lymphedema or Lipedema this point need some TLC. The contact is behind your knee just next to your hamstring tendons. You are not directly in the middle of the back of your knee (popliteal fossa.) If you have a balers cyst please make sure you are not directly on top of it as you can irritate it making it worse! 10-50 pumps. You choose. 1 pump per second (listen to the beat of the song) The more congestion you have = more pumps Do it a minimum 1x daily (better is 2x’s daily.) Congestion will look different for everyone. I ll do a post after we get through the specific 7 of what congestion can look like Some people are going to see results right away, others it’s going to take monthS (yes plural) to see or maybe feel change. Don’t get discouraged as I am going to encourage you to think about how long you have had congested, stagnant lymph. If it’s been months, years, even decades isn’t not realistic to think it’s going to fix over night. I would love it if it did, but our bodies heal at the rate they are able to.
