Don’t know what to do in pre-production? A great final frame isn’t an accident—it’s built during the recce. 📍 If you are just showing up on shoot day and hoping for the best, you are leaving your production up to luck. Here is how I scout locations and lock my setup before rocking up on set: 1️⃣ The Pocket Camera: I don’t drag a full camera rig to a location scout. I use the Cadrage app on my phone. It perfectly mimics my exact camera sensor and lens package. Always imagine the concept first and test it out with your phones before the big camera shows up. 2️⃣ The Microphone Myth: Don’t know how to hide your microphone? Stop stressing over it. Sometimes, the best move is to be a bit silly about it. Take a look at @faithbirkett just hiding at plain sight, and shout out to @_heremia_ for duper clean audio 3️⃣ Chase the Light: I don’t just look at the room; I use sun-tracking apps to know exactly where the natural light will hit at my scheduled shoot time. Understanding how much time you have before the sun switches direction is very crucial in planning your shoots. These are some details that make this sequence pop and stand out ⬇️ . . . 1. Text Motion There are WAY more advanced and cooler ways to add motion to text, but one of the simplest ways is just by changing the size of your text. Depending on the size you can add less or more emphasis on to the word. 2. Mixed Frame Rates Knowing when to slow down footage and when to speed up is crucial to pacing. Using both speeds allows your sequence not to drag and be predictable. A balanced of fast, slow, and normal speed of footage gives the sequence life and variety. 3. Black and White Not the most advanced effect, but black and white can make certain clips stand out from the rest if that’s the intention. Random clips being b&w feels out of place, but when certain clips are b&w, they have an importance to them. In this instance, it makes the text pop out more and stand out. 3 things I learnt from location recce’s 1. Don’t have your head stuck in the mud. Yes your imagination is brilliant and that cool dramatic scene plays out beautifully. But fiction isn’t reality and most of the time your location will require you to re-work the blocking of a scene. So be open to options and opinions, otherwise you’ll be sorry for it down the production line. 2. Watch the sun. Any lighting gal or guy will thank you HEAVILY for this. Just see what windows it’s hits when you’re there, or when it’s likely to set/rise. Check the shadows. As young filmmakers we gotta do our bit to help out every department. But also it’s better for you to know too. 3. Script, script, and more scripts From the moment you go into production, your script is now the bible. Second only to the call sheet and schedule. Bring it to the location early on. Then you can re-enact scenes and fully immerse yourself from the get-go. Also bring a notepad. Mainly cause it helps to write things. And I hate typing on my phone. As I get onto more and more sets, these are the important things that stick: 1. Be prepared: What I did was; go on YouTube and find different tutorials on what I’m doing, and what my position does, and really try to get as much context as I can before I get on set. 2. Be respectful: the worst thing you can do is get in someone’s way and make the work harder. What do you need to do is be super aware of your surroundings and make sure you help, but also don’t get in the way cause that doesn’t help anybody. 3. Be curious: being curious is so important. Today’s setup involves a heavy-duty rig and a precise lighting grid designed to make a standard room feel like a cinematic set. We don’t bring this much gear because we like carrying it. We bring it because the organizations we work with have stories that deserve more than just "good enough." When you're communicating high-level strategy or public trust, the quality of the image is the first thing people feel before they even hear a word. The demand for better storytelling is high.
