✨Let me tell you all of my horseshoe crab facts!! These little creatures are the closest thing we have to a real life dinosaur! They’ve been around, virtually unchanged, for 450 MILLION years which has earned them the nickname “living fossils”! Horseshoe crabs are very well adapted to their mudflat/beach environment, with 10 eyes helping them sense everything around them and 10 legs helping them sift through sand for food and shelter! These crabs are actually more closely related to scorpions and spiders than crabs and they don’t even have real pinchers! During spawning season, horseshoe crabs will use a variety of cues to initiate spawning events. New and full moons are a big cue, as during these cycles the high tides are at their strongest. Water temperature often signals spawning, and strong onshore winds that increase wave action is also though to act as a cue for spawning in areas with minimal tidal influence, such as parts of the Indian River Lagoon in Florida, seen here in this video. 🌊 - #horseshoecrab #animals #marinelife #ocean #nature

I wish horseshoe crabs stayed this little, they are just so cute at this size! 🦀🐚✨ Did you know that horseshoe crabs have been around for 450 million years?! And basically haven’t evolved at all during that time, talk about a perfect animal! These guys are incredibly well adapted to living in harsh conditions and can even survive out of the water for days at a time! I could talk about horseshoe crabs forever if you’d let me!
