IAI thought this was some kind of sand hosepipe lying on the ocean floor… but it’s actually the work of a buried marine worm 🪱🌊
This coiled sand pile is a lugworm cast. The worm lives hidden beneath the sand, swallowing sediment, extracting nutrients, and leaving behind these twisted sand spirals on the surface.
The ocean floor is literally alive beneath your fins.
Fun Facts:
• Lugworms live in U-shaped burrows under the sand.
• They constantly process sand for food.
• The coiled sand on top is their waste (called a cast).
• They help oxygenate and recycle the seabed.
• You almost never see the worm — just the evidence!
