I came to Madeira 3,5 years ago — and ended up staying here to live 😅
At first, it was the landscapes that attracted me — dramatic cliffs, ocean views, endless viewpoints. But what made me stay was something deeper: the comfortable year-round climate, the calm lifestyle, the genuinely kind and welcoming locals, and the overall sense of safety and comfort.
And then there are the Azores.
Located not far from Madeira, they don’t just complement the experience — they expand it. It’s still Portugal, but it feels completely different.
The Azores are more raw and untouched. You can still feel the presence of volcanic activity, and the winter cyclones bring more rain, making the islands even greener than Madeira. It’s a different kind of beauty — more wild, more dramatic.
I often get the same question in my DMs:
“Can we do 4 days in Madeira and 3 days in the Azores?”
And my answer is always the same:
It’s not enough.
If you truly want to experience both, plan separate trips. Spend one trip exploring Madeira (you can also add Porto Santo), and dedicate another trip entirely to the Azores. There are 9 islands in total, and each of them feels unique.
My personal favorites? São Miguel, Flores, Terceira, and Corvo.
