GACourt Grants Malami, Son, Wife N200m bail, each, in N8.7bn Money laundering Allegation
The Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, presided by Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, has admitted former Attorney General of the Federation, AGF, and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN, to bail in the sum of N200 million, pending his trial in the N8.7 billion money laundering allegation against him by the federal government.
Malami and his co-defendants are to produce two sureties, each, who will stand for them in the like sum.
Justice Abdulmalik, in a ruling on bail application by Malami and two others on Friday, ordered that the two sureties must have developed landed properties in Maitama or Asokoro.
The documents of the properties are to be verified by the Deputy Chief Registrar of the Court, while the sureties are also to depose to affidavit of means.
The three defendants are to deposit their travelling documents with the Court and must not travel out of the country without the permission of the court.
Besides, the defendants and their sureties were ordered to deposit their two recent passport photograph with the court.
Meanwhile, Malami and his son have been ordered to be remanded in Kuje prison, while his wife is to be taken to Suleja prison in Niger State, pending their perfection of the bail conditions.
At the time of this report, associates, friends and sympathizers of the former Minister of Justice have been moving round to secure bail for the defendants.
Meanwhile, Justice Abdulmalik has fixed March 16 for commencement of trial on the corruption charges.
The bail applications were argued by Joseph Daudu SAN on behalf of the three defendants.
Jibrin Okutepa SAN who stood for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, did not oppose the bail request.

The Nigerian government has officially withdrawn the terrorism financing allegations against former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdulaziz Malami.
During proceedings on Wednesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the prosecution dropped the initial five-count charge, which had included both terrorism financing and unlawful possession of firearms. The Department of State Services had originally filed the case.
Prosecuting counsel, Chief Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, appearing on behalf of the Attorney-General of the Federation, informed the court that a revised five-count charge dated April 14 had been submitted.
Malami and his son were re-arraigned before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik and entered not guilty pleas to all the updated charges. The court maintained the earlier bail conditions and scheduled the trial to begin on May 26 and continue on June 15.
With the withdrawal of the terrorism-related counts, the case now focuses solely on allegations of illegal firearm possession, significantly reducing the scope of the accusations.
In the earlier charge, Malami had been accused of facilitating terrorism financing by allegedly failing to act on case files involving suspected financiers that were sent to his office in November 2022, contrary to the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
Additional claims had alleged that in December 2025, at their residence in Kebbi State, the defendants were in possession of a Sturm Magnum firearm, live cartridges, and spent ammunition without proper licensing acts previously framed as preparatory steps toward terrorism under relevant laws.

The Nigerian government has withdrawn the allegations of terrorism financing against former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son, Abdulaziz Malami.
The charges were dropped Wednesday in court, leaving only counts related to unlawful possession of firearms.
At the Federal High Court in Abuja the prosecution formally withdrew the original five-count charge of alleged terrorism financing and unlawful possession of firearms that was filed by the Department of State Services.
Prosecutor, Chief Akinlolu Kehinde, SAN, who is representing the current Attorney-General of the Federation, told the court that the government has filed a fresh amended five-count charge dated 14th April.
Former Minister Abubakar Malami and his son, Abdulaziz, took a fresh plea before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik. Both defendants pleaded not guilty to all the amended counts.
The court admitted them to bail on the same terms previously granted and adjourned the matter to the 26th of May and 15th of June for the commencement of trial.
This latest twist significantly narrows the case against the former chief law officer of the federation and his son.
In the former charge Malami was accused of knowingly abetting terrorism financing by allegedly refusing to prosecute suspected terrorism financiers whose case files were forwarded to his office as AGF (around November 2022), in breach of the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022.
The other charges in the previous five counts: In December 2025, at their home in Kebbi State, they allegedly possessed without a license a Sturm Magnum 17-0101 firearm, 16 live Redstar AAA 5’20 cartridges, and 27 expended cartridges. This is framed as conduct in preparation for an act of terrorism under the Terrorism Act and Firearms Act.

HACourt Fixes March 10 For Trial Of Malami, Son, On Terrorism Allegation
The Federal High Court, sitting in Abuja, on Wednesday, fixed March 10 for the trial of former Attorney-General of the Federation, and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami; including his son, Abdulaziz Malami; on allegations of terrorism financing.
The presiding Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, adjourned proceedings on the request of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Rotimi Oyedepo, who informed the court that the prosecution needed more time to familiarise itself with the facts of the case.
Oyedepo told the court that the case file was recently transferred from the Department of State Services, DSS, to the Department of Public Prosecutions.
Counsel to the defendants, Adedayo Adedeji, who did not oppose the application, however, urged the court to strike out the matter, if the prosecution fails to open its case at the next adjourned date, citing lack of diligent prosecution.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, accordingly, adjourned the matter to March 10 for trial and for the prosecution to formally open its case.

TVJustice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has granted bail to the former Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, his son Abdulaziz Malami, and his wife Asabe Bashir, in the sum of N200million each and two sureties in like sum.
As part of the bail conditions, one of the sureties is to deposit title deeds of properties in highbrow Maitama or Asokoro.
The defendants have been ordered to deposit their international passports with the court.
They are to remain in the custody of the Nigerian correctional service pending perfection of their bail conditions.
The case was adjourned until March 16th for trial.
The ruling is a result of the bail application filed by the former AGF after he was re-arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
The EFCC had re-arrianged the defendants on 27th February on a 16-count charge of alleged money laundering.
They all pleaded not guilty to the charges, after which the court adjourned until 6th March for ruling on bail application.
