Leadership moments don't look urgent until they're gone. 🫠 Here's what's at stake: Someone on your team has potential. They're showing up, learning fast, asking the right questions. But if no one notices, if no one calls it out and develops it—that spark fades. And you lose a future leader you didn't even know you had. 🤷‍♂️The conflict: During a recent operations meeting, the Superintendent was asked a simple question: "Is there anybody you're looking at and saying, man, you could potentially be a really good Crew Lead?" The answer was no. Not because no one had potential, but because the team was still new. Less than a year in. That's when the coaching moment landed: As a leader, you can ignite a flame under that motivation… or you can overlook it, and it gets drowned out. It becomes a lost cause. Most leadership failures don't come from bad intent. They come from inaction—waiting until motivation drops, performance slips or problems surface before stepping in. ✅The resolution: Leadership happens earlier. It happens when you recognize potential before it fades and it happens when expectations are set before friction exists. In that same meeting, a new Apprentice was starting Monday. The question came: "Do we have his performance expectations ready?" The answer was yes—scheduled for Monday morning right after the huddle. Clarity before chaos. Here's The Playbook: 🎯Actively look for leadership potential—don't wait for it to announce itself 🎯Have performance expectations ready before day one, not after problems arise 🎯Deliver expectations early—first day, first conversation :dart: Make leadership development a system, not a reaction to performance issues 🎯Check in regularly: Who's ready for more? Who needs to be seen? Leadership isn't reactive.
