landed in san juan today and immediately called manzana de java after seeing that they had no tables available tonight, hoping that they might have room for a lonely lil solo traveler. boy was I in for a treat. manzana de java is chef manuel massa’s puerto rican farm-to-table restaurant. it’s ranked number two on beli eats for ALL categories in san juan (!!) and is a travelers’ choice winner. I started with their house-made tropical vermouth (sugar cane cured in white wine, panela, macerated citrus, ginger, and galangal) and the ceviche (cacao, seasonal fruits, puma chili, kaffir lime) which was one of the best I’ve ever had. it paired perfectly with the tostones, which were breadfruit with brown butter, roasted garlic, lavender, and rosemary. I am still thinking about those tostones. for mains, I asked for my server’s advice and she suggested that I try both the mofongo and pastel since it was my first time having either. so I did, and wowowow… the pastel was hen with tarragon, guinea maloja, green banana, and taro. the mofongo was green plantain confit in duck fat with the most divine consommé. if all mofongo and pastel taste like this then I’ve been missing out for 35 years. every dish had incredible depth and surprising complexity. you could taste the intention behind everything - the sourcing, the technique, the respect for puerto rican ingredients and culinary heritage. thoughtful touches like the kaffir lime in the ceviche elevated traditional flavors without overshadowing them. the space is tiny. maybe ten to fifteen seats. warm lighting, art gallery vibes, close tables. it was so good that I’m already trying to figure out how to get back in before I leave san juan. all that to say… always call, even if it looks like there’s nothing available. worst case they say no. best case you get a meal that leaves you stunned. #puertoricotravel #benitobowl #sanjuanpr
