ASCaptain America: Civil War (2016) introduced Spider-Man into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. After Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures reached a rights-sharing agreement, the search for a new Peter Parker began.
Actors reported to be tested or seriously considered included Tom Holland, Asa Butterfield, Charlie Rowe, Matthew Lintz, and Nat Wolff. Tom Holland was ultimately cast after multiple screen tests, including chemistry reads with Robert Downey Jr., with Marvel favoring his age, physicality, and dance and gymnastics background.
Holland’s Spider-Man debuted as a supporting character within the larger conflict between Steve Rogers and Tony Stark. His costume was designed by Stark in the story, allowing for expressive eye lenses and advanced suit functions. Filming for Spider-Man’s scenes took place primarily at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta in 2015, with Holland shooting much of his material separately to avoid plot leaks. Motion capture and CGI were used extensively, particularly for Spider-Man’s movement and combat during the airport battle.
Civil War was released on May 6, 2016, following heavy anticipation driven by the Avengers’ internal split and Spider-Man’s return to Marvel Studios. The film opened to approximately $179.1 million domestically in its first weekend. It went on to gross about $408 million in North America and roughly $1.15 billion worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing film of 2016 globally at the time.
