ME“In Fill Out” reveals how heat can transform the inner structures of 3D-printed objects into unexpected, voluminous forms. By boiling recycled PLA pieces in hot water, designer Leo Koda softens their surfaces while the air inside expands, allowing the hidden geometry to push outward and define a new shape. The results are never identical—differences in structure and heating time create one‑of‑a‑kind appearances.
To showcase this process, Leo developed an “everyday objects” collection featuring a wall clock, pen organizer, mirror and candleholder. Each piece highlights how a flat 6 mm sheet can expand to nearly 36 mm, forming its own character without the need for support materials thanks to carefully considered angles.
This project turns a simple act—boiling water—into a sculpting method, revealing the beauty hidden inside 3D‑printed forms.
