JBIn February 2020, locals in Haldia, West Bengal, spotted smoke near the Hooghly River and discovered two burning bodies. Police identified the victims as Rama Dey (40) and her daughter Riya Dey (22).
Investigations revealed that they were drugged and then burned alive by Saddam Hussain, a labor contractor who was romantically involved with both women.
Rama had divorced her husband and lived separately in Haldia, while Riya was a student in New Barrackpore. Both women were active on social media.
Saddam initially met Rama, then started a romantic relationship with Riya.
Eventually, all three began living closely and even socializing together. Riya later discovered that Saddam was already married with children and had lied to her about his marital status.
Feeling betrayed, Riya threatened to go to the police. To avoid marriage or jail, Saddam plotted their murder.
On February 17, he invited the women to his place, mixed sedatives in their food, and—along with his friend Manzoor—strangled them once they were unconscious.
They tried to bury the bodies near the Hooghly River, but since the women were still alive, they burned them alive out of panic.
A viral police post helped identify the victims. Saddam and his accomplices—Manzoor, Sukhdev, and Aminur—were arrested.
A marriage certificate between Riya and Saddam dated 2018 and Riya’s diary revealed suspicions of an affair between Saddam and her mother too, complicating the relationships further.

HIQueen Rosamund and the gruesome cup by Fortunino Matania
Rosamund’s people, the Gepid, fought a losing battle against the Lombards for 20 years, ca. 550-570. The Lombards had killed her grandfather (the king) and her uncle.
Her father, Cunimund, lost the kingdom in 567, and he was decapitated. She was taken as a prisoner by King Alboin of Lombard, which is the scene depicted here.
Alboin’s late wife had not produced a male heir and so he married Rosamund for this purpose. He was noted for his cruelty. The title of this story (A Gruesome Cup) derives from a report by Paulus Diaconus, who states that at a royal banquet in Verona, Alboin forced her to drink from the skull of her dead father (which he carried around his belt), inviting her “to drink merrily with her father.”
WHAT HAPPENED AFTER?
Along with her lover, Helmichis, the king’s arms bearer, she plotted Alboin’s assassination. Helmichis recommended Peredeo, the king's chamber-guard, to carry out the act, but he refused to help. Disguised as a servant, Rosamund bedded Peredeo and blackmailed him into helping. Following a great feast, the drunken king was murdered.
Rosamund ran off with Helmichis and a trove of Alboin’s private treasures. Soon after they married, however, she took up with another of the assassination conspirators, Longinus, whom she promised to marry in exchange for offing Helmichis. On to this plot against him, however, Helmichis forced Rosamund to drink the poison she had planned for him, after which he committed s_icide from the same cup.
