In just a few months, @hooflife.aotearoa has rapidly grown, particularly within the Māori and Pacific communities. What began as a viral TikTok moment of Matene riding his hoiho through Manurewa has transformed into a rewarding program where youth build confidence and forge strong connections through working with horses.
Hooflife integrates tikanga Māori and te reo Māori into its classes, making each session a unique experience that fosters personal growth. Participants start out shy or with a “tough walrua” and leave with newfound confidence and joy from their experience.
Matene’s goal is to expand his programs to reach even more young people, demonstrating how a bond with horses can lead to personal growth and a supportive community.
