On March 9, roughly 2.5 million students sat down for the CBSE Class 12 Mathematics paper. Standard stuff. Three hours. Calculus, probability, vectors. Then someone scanned the QR code printed on the question paper.
Instead of a verification portal, they got Rick Astley.
"Never Gonna Give You Up" playing on their phones in the examination hall — on an official CBSE document. The internet did not recover for the rest of the day.
Students filmed it. Screenshots flooded X within the hour. Reddit threads climbed fast. People who had already handed in their papers went back to scan the code themselves just to confirm it was real. It was.
CBSE came out with a statement the following morning. Papers are genuine, they said. Security uncompromised. The matter is being taken seriously and necessary steps are being taken.
What the board did not say is how the link got there. No vendor named. No stage of the printing pipeline identified. No explanation for how a URL pointing to a 1987 British pop song passed through every quality check and ended up on a national examination paper.
The paper itself, for what it is worth, was moderate and lengthy. Teachers noted a missing bracket in at least two question sets. In any other news cycle, that would have been the story.
Instead, 2.5 million students will remember their Class 12 Maths paper for Rick Astley. And honestly? Fair enough.
