SU🧮 Our children need VISUAL, PRACTICAL and hands-on learning in the initial stages.
🧮 Best practice has and always will be to physically explore maths concepts with physical objects, and play, then moving onto drawing the problems once this stage has been secured.
🧮 This means repeating a problem in lots of different ways with physical resources before moving on, ensuring that the child fully understands the concept first.
🧮 This then gives them the foundational layers of understanding that they can later build upon so that eventually, they have the mathematical skills and knowledge they need to solve problems like this one using mental methods.
❌ Many children are unfortunately missing this step therefore depriving them of those foundations. This leads to maths anxiety, detachment, a poor relationship with maths and low self/esteem.
❌ They’re being given worksheets, or being taught from a whiteboard, passively watching thinking about what they are having for lunch rather than ‘doing’ which is how maths skills truly develop!

PR📚 Word problems are the hardest questions on most maths tests.
Not because the numbers are difficult —�but because the wording confuses children.
Here’s an example of a maths word problem👇
“A farmer has 18 cows in a field.�He puts them into groups of 3.�How many groups does he make altogether?”
But here’s the trick…
Only 4–6 words actually matter.
Everything else is just part of the story.
This question is really:
18 ÷ 3
👇 These are the words to focus on in maths word problems.
➕ Addition�add�plus�sum�total�together
➖ Subtraction�subtract�take away�take from�minus�difference�distance between�reduce�decrease�fewer
✖️ Multiplication�times�multiply�multiplied by�product
➗ Division�shared equally�split�divided�per�each gets�how many in each�how many groups
🧹 Words children can usually ignore
These are usually just part of the story:�names�places�objects�opinions�extra details
🎯 When children learn to spot key maths vocabulary, their problem-solving improves, their maths reasoning gets stronger, and their test scores go up.
