JEHave you heard of the “birthday party test” ?
It’s a way that dietitian’s (like me!) get curious about how kids react at birthday parties when they are presented with A LOT of ‘junk’ foods that may be off-limits in many houses.
Does your kid hyper-fixate and get overexcited about the food being served? Waits by the snack table munching the whole time? Asks for seconds (or even thirds of cake)? Overeats often and feels sick?
If so, they are may be feeling overly restricted in there day to day life. They don’t have enough access to these “forbidden foods” and may even feel guilt or shame for wanting them 💔
The other group I see are those that are happy to have some snacks and cake, but are actually more interested in the games, balloons, activities, music and time with their friends. These foods aren’t forbidden at home and they likely have access to them regularly. This decreases there “specialness” and give them the freedom to enjoy all the other aspects of the party. They eat intuitively, listening to their body.
If your kid is reacting more similarly to the first group, I mentioned I don’t want you to beat yourself up instead take this information and use it to implement some changes at home. Offer more ‘forbidden foods’ like chips, candy, cookies, cake. Randomly bring home a cake or cupcakes and let them have their fill. Offer dessert more often.
This is how we help kids (and adults) lose the “last supper mentality”. The feeling that they better eat it now or they may not have a chance later. This is how we raise intuitive eaters ❤️

PLHow cool is this place mat?! I designed this double-sided reusable placemat for my Food Explorers workshops. One side is a sensory treasure hunt with fun visuals to guide step-by-step food exploration. The second side is a more open-ended game board. Both can be adapted for different age groups. My 5yo was the first to test it out tonight during dinner. We went at her pace, using the visuals as a guide and modeling without expectation as a strategy.
