IKHere are 5 things you probably didn’t know about me: 🎙️✨
1️⃣ In my first year, I gave up more than once. I even listed my studio equipment for sale. I felt totally lost and unsure if I could really do this. But something kept pulling me back to clay — and I’m glad I listened.
2️⃣ I have a son from a past relationship, and my wife and my ex are actually really good friends. We even go on holiday together. It might sound unusual, but it works — and it means the world to me that we’ve created this kind of harmony.
3️⃣ Glazing still confuses me. Even now. Some firings are magic, others are total question marks. I’ve learned a lot, but it still surprises me sometimes…. Maybe time to do some courses …
4️⃣ I often doubt my work. I don’t always talk about it, but it’s there. That feeling of “is this good enough?” doesn’t completely go away. But I’ve learned to keep going anyway and more importantly also learnt when to step away….
5️⃣ I love traveling — it’s one of the best and most important experiences I can give my family. It shifts your perspective, makes you feel small (in the best way), and fills you with new ideas. If I could, I’d take them everywhere.

FEIn ode to the annual ✨ March Meet The Maker ✨ That I pretty much miss every year… 😅 It would be a great time to reintroduce myself… I’m Nicola Fernandes a Manchester based, Norwich born illustrator, Mural Artist, Painter, @flockandgaggle Creator, Cry Baby, Bird Nerd and many more things…. I love designing greeting cards and stickers amongst other playful gifts. I have ADHD with a sprinkling of depression and social anxiety, a large helping of dyslexia and I always fail those ‘are you a robot?’ tests! 🤖👀✨
I live life pessimistically optimistically because I always tend to be hurled into some kind of chaotic learning curve and I often become simultaneously emotionally extroverted and introverted 😅🙃✨

SHPart Four of Revealing Mystery Moulds I found on Gumtree...
So it’s been a hot minute since part three I promise it was for a good reason. I went back and reshot a bit of the footage from earlier parts to make a YouTube of extended cuts. The extended cuts show the reveals in more detail. Squishing hours of work into a 60/30 second videos is almost impossible so the YouTube aims to show you more in depth of the whole process plus more footage of the reveal in action. So far I have only posted part one but the rest of the parts up to part four will be going up over the next two weeks. Link to subscribe to my YouTube is in my bio. Then content will flow and I’ll be back to posting every week.
SPOILER: what do you think of this one? Did you guess that it was a birdhouse in my stories? I saw a few people guessing correctly but not many saw its sweet house potential. A lot of you said it was a vase. It’s a really sweet birdhouse but I’m not quite sure how I will put it in a tree as the mould has no identifying marks for hanging, maybe the next one I’ll have to put my own little hanging holes in. Would you rock this birdhouse in your backyard?

This is my dream space to work and one of my favourite places to be 💕
When I first began making jewellery I used to work from my flat, sitting on the bed making beaded pieces and storing things wherever there was space ✨
Now, twenty years later, I have a larger and more open area to create in, with dedicated benches for different purposes and a beautiful view of the sea 🌊☺️
It’s taken me a long time and a lot of hard work to build up to this and when I started I had no idea where I would end up but with small daily actions working towards a dream things gradually unfolded for me and I know they are for you too 🙌

SHThings I don’t feel guilty about as a ceramic artist…
- Setting my prices. These reflect my time, skill, materials and years of practise.
- Allowing my style to change and evolve. Exploration is a huge part of my creative process.
- Saying no to commissions that don’t align with my work or capacity.
- Creating pieces I genuinely love, not just what’s expected or trending.
- Taking breaks from the wheel. Rest is so important to the creative flow and my mental health.
- Creating pieces for me first. This allows me to really hones in on a design before selling.
I think guilt is a normal feeling to have as a small business owner and creative, but setting boundaries for yourself as an artist is so important 🩷
