KE🇫🇷 Day 3: The Somme & Vimy Ridge | #WW1Tour26
A deeply moving day exploring the scars and stories of France. We began at the towering Vimy Ridge, walking through the preserved trenches and standing before the breathtaking memorial—a powerful start to a day of remembrance.
📍 Highlights of the Day:
* Vimy Ridge Memorial: Standing on Hill 145, this land was gifted to Canada by France in 1922; the memorial's two pylons represent the two nations and the 11,285 Canadians missing in France.
* Thiepval Memorial: As the largest Commonwealth memorial in the world, it bears the names of over 72,000 British and South African soldiers who have no known grave.
* Sunken Lane & Hawthorn Crater: This was the site of the famous Hawthorn Ridge mine explosion, filmed by Geoffrey Malins just ten minutes before the infantry advanced on 1 July 1916.
* Newfoundland Memorial Park: Home to the bronze Caribou monument, this preserved battlefield marks where the Royal Newfoundland Regiment was almost wiped out within the first half-hour of the Battle of the Somme.
* Field Medicine: Jim gave a brilliant demonstration on the vital roles of stretcher bearers and field dressings—the very techniques used in the chaos of the front lines.
🥣 A Moment of Respite
We couldn't have asked for a better lunch than at Avril’s Tea Rooms.
Did you know? The tea room sits above an original WWI cellar that served as a stretcher-bearer post and advanced dressing station during the war.
As always, we were looked after so well—a beautiful, fascinating spot for a much-needed warm soup and sandwich!
🍴 Evening in Lille & Ypres
We finished the day with a fantastic dinner at the Mercure Hotel in Lille (the food was truly beautiful!) before heading back for some late-night shopping in the charming streets of Ypres.

NANext in our "Sites of Memory in Contemporary Europe" series, we have France. One of the main research pillars of the Nanovic Institute is "Memory and Remembering". So, for this project Nanovic has partnered with Notre Dame Students to research different sites of memory around Europe and analyze why these historical sites in a contemporary environment might be "contested".

BOLast Wednesday, 28 January 2026, we had the incredible honor of welcoming James and Amy for a visit in Trou du Loup aka The Wolfgap near Grandmenil. James is the great-nephew of Richard F. Wiegand, who on 25 December 1944 single-handedly stopped the 2nd SS Das Reich Division with one bazooka shot.
James and Amy traveled all the way from Pennsylvania to Grandmenil to search for the exact place where Richard fired his shot and ultimately gave his life.
During their visit, we also paid our respects at his grave at the Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery, visited the MHM44 Museum, and held a small ceremony at Trou du Loup, by the monument dedicated to this extraordinary hero.
May we never forget his ultimate sacrifice!

JMUne autre belle journée au Musée du Royal Montreal Regiment 🤩 Il y a quelques jours, une vingtaine d'élèves des Pays de Galles sont venus visités le musée pour découvrir l'histoire militaire canadienne ! Avec Ron, Amynte, Marina et Julien, ils ont ainsi pu en apprendre sur notre histoire, manipuler des artefacts... et manger des Timbits 😋
