These tickets sell quick and are listed on recreation.gov 14 days in advance at 8:00AM MDT! (We will be back, because this is a must and we did not know, as this was a last minute trip) 🚙There is many pull offs throughout the park to see many cliff dwellings and pit-houses! 🥾It’s 20 miles to get to everything in the park! Plan for an all day adventure with all of the short hikes and pull offs! Want more? Mesa Verde National Park 1 Day Itinerary✨🥾 We had the wonderful opportunity to RV camp within the park and take two tours: The Balcony House and The Cliff Palace. We visited the National Park in early June for context. ⛰️Located around 6,800 – 8,500 feet in the mountains is the beautiful and underrated Mesa Verde National Park. Mesa Verde was established as a National Park in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt. ‼️Tours start around mid-May and end around mid-October. There are Ranger-led Tours and also Ranger-Assisted Tours. 🎟️You can buy tickets on recreation.gov 𝗖𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗳 𝗣𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 For this tour, you start at a view point of these cliff dwellings and then descend down a series of stairs to the Cliff Palace. This tour group is fairly large – I recall it being about 45 people in our group. There are three tour guides who lead this effort and provide historical background about the dwellings. Additionally, this incredible structure resides under a cliffside, which is why it is so well preserved. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘆 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 This tour is not for the faint of heart. We took the ranger led tour because that is the only tour offered for the Balcony House. It lasts around an hour to an hour and a half and there are a series of ladders, tight spaces, and stairs. This tour had around 35 people and consists of climbing to a cliffside dwelling. 📸Besides the guided tours, there are plenty of trails and viewing points within Mesa Verde National Park. Some of the viewpoints within the park that are worth stopping at are the Geologic Overlook and the Sun Point View. At the Sun Point View, you can get a view of the Cliff Palace. ⛺️We had the opportunity to dry camp one night in the Morefield Campground. While there are some full hook ups, we only were able to get a dry camping spot. #mesaverdenationalpark #mesaverde #coloradohikes #coloradohiking #cliffpalace

Most of its structures were built roughly between 1190 and 1260, when the Ancestral Puebloans began to move from the Mesa above (where they farmed a variety of crops & hunted for food) into the alcoves along these cliffs. Throughout Mesa Verde, there are about 600 cliff dwellings — though ~75% have no more than 1-5 rooms. Despite this, the park features an incredible display of all aspects of life in the 13th century. Surprisingly, by the year 1300, just about all of these dwellings had been abandoned, and most of its people had moved south towards Arizona & New Mexico. Allow 45 mins for the tour. 🎫 When booking the tour, tickets can be purchased only on recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777. Tickets are available 14 days in advance, 8:00 am MDT, on a rolling daily window. For example, tickets for May 17th will be available starting May 3rd at 8:00 am MDT. Very important 🚨 You won't receive a ticket, so it's essential to have a copy of your receipt to participate in the tour. Due to the poor cell service, they are unable to retrieve reservations at the tour locations. They advise you to either take a screenshot of your receipt or print it out prior to your arrival at the park. It’s known for the Ancestral Puebloan Cliff dwellings & Native American culture, and reminds us that we are on native land. 📌SAVE this itinerary: 📍Mesa Verde National Park, Mosca, Colorado 🤩View Cliff Palace from the overlook OR book a guided ranger tour in advance (reservations required on recreation.gov) ➡️We didn’t have time for this but I’d recommend it if you do have the time! I would have loved to see the cliff dwellings up close 🚗Drive the scenic Mesa Top Loop Road 📸Stop at a variety of overlooks, including Mancos Valley Overlook, Park Point Overlook, Geologic Overlook, Sun Point Overlook 🥾Hike: most trails in the park are fairly short - Park Point Overlook, Soda Canyon Overlook, Petroglyph Point Trail 🪨Visit Chaplin Mesa Archeological Museum to learn about the Ancestral Pueblo people & cultural objects ⚠️Stay on trail & follow national park rules. Leashed dogs allowed in some areas. Bring water & sun protection as there’s little shade in this park. 🛌Stay at @mesaverdemotel right outside the park!
