ATAtlavox Beacon cold weather performance. The snow finally slid off the panel and we got nice bump in not only battery charging, but internal temperature rose to the 50°s F which is great for battery health while charging. The sun was only out for a quick second but regardless, brought us up to the 70% range for battery charge. Really good outcome so far on this test.

MA🇺🇸🇬🇧 Meshtastic & Meshcore. Messaging without the Internet.
During protests, some governments shut down the internet on purpose. When that happens, it is not just the network that disappears. People lose the ability to coordinate, to tell what is happening, to stay in contact. This is why this story matters. It is about a system that lets us send and receive messages using our phones, without the internet.
The system is called Meshtastic. It is open source and has no central owner. It lets people and devices exchange messages using radio, not the internet. Every device becomes a node. Each node sends radio signals for hundreds of meters, sometimes for kilometers. When nodes can reach each other, they automatically form a network.
Think big and keep it simple. One node in Boston, one in New York, one in Washington. Boston cannot reach Washington directly, but New York is in the middle. The message goes from Boston to New York, then to Washington. Every new node makes the network bigger. Anyone can add one.
From the same idea came Meshcore. It is another open source system, similar to Meshtastic, but designed to let messages travel across many more nodes. Devices can cost as little as 10 or 20 dollars. No infrastructure is needed. No operator. No big investment. Someone just turns on a node. Some people place them on rooftops with solar panels. Others put them on trees.
These devices connect via Bluetooth to an app on the phone. We write messages, see other nodes, choose channels. The phone is only an interface. It can even be offline or in airplane mode. Real communication happens by radio, between nodes.
I tested both systems here in Manhattan during a snowstorm, when internet and cellular networks were unstable. The nodes kept working normally.
When many people use these systems and many nodes are active, it will be possible to send messages across the planet by radio, with no central control and nothing to shut down. Even if the internet goes dark. That is why you will hear more and more about this in the coming years.

MA🇮🇹 Meshtastic & MeshCore. La rivoluzione per mandare messaggi senza Internet.
Avete presente quando, durante le proteste, in alcuni Stati Internet viene spento deliberatamente. In quei casi non sparisce solo la rete. Sparisce la possibilità di coordinarsi, di raccontare cosa sta succedendo, di restare in contatto. Seguitemi fino alla fine perché vi voglio parlare di una rivoluzione che cambia tutto e che permetterà di inviare e ricevere messaggi in tutto il mondo, dal nostro telefono, senza bisogno di Internet.
Anche se vi sembra una cosa tecnica, statemi a sentire perché prima di tutto questa è una questione sociale e culturale. Un po’ come all’inizio di Internet. All’epoca, quando lo spiegavo, parlavo di computer collegati tra loro e pensavano parlassi di qualcosa di tecnico e basta. Oggi sappiamo che Internet è stata prima di tutto una rivoluzione sociale.
La rivoluzione si chiama Meshtastic e MeshCore. Sono sistemi open source, senza un proprietario centrale, che permettono di comunicare via messaggio tra persone o dispositivi senza bisogno di Internet. Ogni dispositivo che entra nella rete diventa un nodo. Ogni nodo trasmette via radio per centinaia di metri, spesso anche per chilometri in linea d’aria.
Per creare un nodo basta un piccolo dispositivo a basso costo. Per ora sono ancora cose da smanettoni, come lo era Internet per noi all’inizio, ma a voi non interessa quanti smanettamenti dobbiamo fare per fare in modo che questi piccoli dispositivi che trasmettono via radio diventino un nodo della rete Meshtastic. Una volta creato un nodo si diventa parte della catena.
Si tratta di una rivoluzione che si basa sull’accessibilità, perché i dispositivi su cui installare Meshtastic o MeshCore costano anche solo 10 dollari. Questo è il motivo per cui una rete del genere può diventare diffusa. Non serve un’infrastruttura, non serve un operatore, non serve un investimento enorme. Serve solo che qualcuno accenda un nodo.
