How to layer for outdoor winter adventures (the right way): ➡️ save for future reference! If you’re layering with cotton sweatshirts in winter, no shame — most of us have done it! But cotton holds onto moisture, and that gets chilly fast. Merino wool, on the other hand, keeps you warm and dry. ✨Here’s exactly how I layer for winter adventures where I know I’ll get sweaty (hiking, backcountry skiing, fat biking… all the fun stuff): 1️⃣ Base Layer: Merino Wool It keeps moisture off your body while still insulating. Think: the same way sheep stay warm even when it’s snowing. Cotton does the opposite — it soaks up sweat and makes you cold. And trust me, the last thing you want on a mountain is to be cold and wet. 2️⃣ Mid Layer: Insulated Vest or Jacket Light, warm, and easy to remove. When I’m hiking up and start to heat up, this layer goes straight into my pack. I usually climb in just my base layer, then throw the insulation back on at the top. 3️⃣ Shell Layer: Wind + Weather Protection Vermont mountain weather changes FAST. A proper shell blocks wind, keeps heat in, and can make the difference between “this is fun” and “I’m freezing.” Bottom Layers: • Wool socks (hi @darntoughvermont 💚) • Insulated or shell pants that cinch around your boots so snow doesn’t sneak in. If you layer this way, you’ll stay warm, dry, and comfortable — even when you’re sweating your way up a mountain. ❄️Comment “WINTER” and I’ll send you my go-to winter essentials list ❄️

Follow @ferlattez for more winter hiking tips❄️✨ I’ve been hiking for a few years now and this is what works best for me: ❄️ Base Layer: The piece of clothing worn against the skin. It wicks away the moisture from your skin to keep you dry. When you are out winter hiking, you want to use a material that is not cotton as cotton holds onto moisture, keeps you chilled, and can lead to you getting hypothermia. Merino Wool set from @smartwool_canada ✨Mid Layer: the mid layer traps in the heat to keep you insulated and warm and is important to wear when the temperatures are really cold like in our lovely Quebec province! When it gets between -20 and -30, I add an additional fleece before my puffer and another warm pants before my outer layer. Puffy jacket AND/OR fleece. Mine is from @hellyhansen ⛰️Outer Layer: The outer layer should be a material that will protect you from the winter weather conditions. So if it is snowing or raining, it should be waterproof. If it’s windy, it should be able to break the wind. My Jacket & hiking pants from @hellyhansen 🧦 Feet: One thing I would recommend if you are looking for winter hiking boots, is see if the boot your currently wear comes in an insulated version, to keep you warmer. Merino wool socks from @smartwool_canada & Winter Hiking boots from @merrellcanada 🧤 Hands: Making sure you have the proper warm hands is just as important as your core layers. Touchescreen gloves + warm mitts from @auclairsports . Hand warmers are also a must when it’s super cold and I take photos! 🩵Pro Tips: Depending on the weather I use my microspikes OR my snowshoes. I like to add hiking poles when hiking with my baby. It helps me to balance the weight and know where to put my feet on the trail. I also like to carry hand &feet warmers in my pockets just in case the weather changes quickly! I always have a neck warmer to cover my face too. I like to bring boiled water to warm up later during my hike when I’m thirsty!✌🏼 Do you have any questions? Let me know in the comments!❄️⬇️ Save & Share with your outdoorsy friends!✨ #winter #GRWM #winterhike #layering #winterlayers #hikingoutfit

When you’re heading out to watch the northern lights near Fairbanks, staying warm is everything. Here’s the layering system that keeps us outside long enough to actually enjoy the show: • Base layers @livehotchillys @smartwool • Mid layer @cotopaxi • Puffy pants @wearswoop • Puffy jacket @cotopaxi • Neck buff @happyak907 @turtlefur • Fleece beanie @tidewaterfleece • Bunny boots @alaskagearcompany Make sure to wear wool socks and bring gloves! Hand warmers are also very useful. Aurora tips for Fairbanks: • It can be -10° to -30°F at night ‼️ dress warmer than you think‼️ • The aurora comes and goes… patience is part of the experience • The best shows often happen after midnight • At @theoverlookalaska in Fox you can literally watch the sky from inside, which means when she shows up at 1am, you won’t miss it 👏 #ilovealaska #explorealaska #travelalaska #getreadywithme #fairbanksalaska

At the end of September, I had the opportunity to climb Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route with my partner and his family! Climbing Kilimanjaro takes you through three separate temperate zones and up and down 14,000’/4267m of elevation to the summit at 19,341’/5895m. Going through so many different climates, it’s essential to have a layering system to take you from the rainforest to the high alpine summit. I’m partnering with @backcountry to share some of my layers and encourage you to get outside and find your backcountry. Use code CAROLINEG for 15% off your first order at backcountry.com (some exclusions apply). Here’s what I wore: 🔸Synthetic t-shirt. I wore the Patagonia Capilene Cool long-sleeve. 🔸Trekking pants. Because I wanted a little bit more weather and wind protection as well as abrasion resistance, I opted to wear trekking pants instead of leggings (Patagonia Altvia Pants). 🔸Wind layer: Patagonia Houdini Air is my year round go-to to take the edge off. 🔸Mid Layer: I opted for the Patagonia Nano air hoodie because it’s warm but stretchy and breathable. 🔸Lightweight insulated jacket: I wore the Patagonia Micropuff hoodie. 🔸Summit day parka: I covered up everyrthing with the Patagonia Das Light Parka and pants. 🔸Sunglasses: I like to switch out eyewear to prevent eye fatigue. I wore the Julbo Stowe glasses for most of the time with side shields to keep dust and dirt out of my eyes. On summit night, I wore the July Fury reactive 1-3 because they keep the wind out of my eyes when it’s dark. 🔸Headlamp: I swear by the Petzl Swift RL because it only weighs 3.5 oz and has 900 lumens of brightness. 🔸Backpack: I used the Patagonia Altvia 28L to keep everything organized while keeping my daypack light. 🔸Hip belt: I swear by the Patagonia black hole ultralight hip belt to organize my camera equipment and batteries while I’m hiking. It’s been really cold here lately, so let’s talk winter layers!  This video shows what I would wear on a pretty cold day. The beauty of using layers is that I can remove layers as needed. If it's warmer out or I'm going to be pretty active, I might ditch the outer layer or mid layer. If the chances of getting wet are low, I'll skip my waterproof pants. It's a mix-and-match system! Here are the layers I have on. These layers would also apply to gear for kids. BASE LAYER: This is the layer closest to the body. It should fit snugly and is often made of wool or synthetic materials. It doesn't need to be thick, as its primary purpose is to wick away sweat from your skin. I also have wool socks here. MID LAYER: The next layer is to provide warmth! Here I'm wearing a fleece jacket and pajama bottoms. Anything that is warm and comfy would work for this layer, but maybe skip cotton if you're not going to be near a change of clothing. You can change the thickness of this layer depending on how cold it is. However, don't add a layer to your feet here - it's usually not a good idea to double up on socks. OUTER LAYER: This layer is to add waterproofing and to cover extremities. They might add warmth, too, depending on your needs. Here I have on rain pants (which only add waterproofing) and a winter coat (which adds both waterproofing and warmth). In addition, there are lots of footwear, hats, gloves, and scarf options you could add depending on how cold it is and if you need waterproofing. Hope this helps you to prepare for going outside in the cold! What questions do you have about winter layers? #wintergear #coldweather #layering #allthelayers #thecolddoesntbothermeanyway

Mid Layer: Ignition ¼ zip design to trap body heat in, featuring a double-knit three-dimensional waffle construction with stand collar around your neck to keep you warm. Aero jacket featuring a stretch woven water-resistant shell with back ventilation to protect you against rain showers, snow & wind. Run Glove with moisture-wicking and quick-drying stretch brushed thermal fabric & touch screen compatible finger tips keeps cold hands at bay all winter long. Base layers matter! Comment “Winter Outfit” for all the links. ❄️ Base Layer: my best-fitting petite friendly merino base is actually a kids set that I included in the links (sz 11-12 fits me perfectly like xxsp) Finely knit merino wool is great for staying warm without overheating indoors since it helps regulate your body temps, and can be more moisture wicking and odor resistant than cotton. However I haven’t found any merino base layer tops with a low neckline, so still wear this synthetic scoopneck thermal top often! ❄️ Mid Layer: cashmere is lightweight yet warm. This is one of my favorite affordable cashmere cardigans that is petite friendly. I also like a looser cut jean or pant to fit comfortably over base layer pants. ❄️ Outer Layer: lined wool coat or water resistant down puffer coat ❄️ Winter Accessories: linked a pair of leather gloves starting in size XS if you have small hands! There’s no bad weather, only bad clothes Tip 1 - the shorter the top, the higher the pants so no cold slips in Tip 2 - layers! Some jackets are built for the extreme cold so your layers don’t matter as much (still good to account for due to sweating etc). Base layer you want sweat wicking so moisturize doesn’t sit there. Make sure your base layer is well fitted, if too loose the sweat wicking won’t happen. Wool is great for this! Mid layer all about insulation, pretty much making up for the lack of warmth on your outer layer. Fleece is amazing for this layer! Then the outer layer ideally provides warmth as well (down filled I’m looking at you). Outer layer is also a shield from the elements! You can find all these layers synthetic or natural materials depending on your preference tip 3 - classic Uggs are cute….. but they’re literally slippers lol! You want warmth + protection + grip. Ugg the brand itself does carry more practical models vs the classic. My current obsession is Hoka Kaha! Tip 4 - protect those fingers! Also gloves stop cold air from slipping in through your sleeve Tip 5 - a fur hood isn’t just meant for a cute fashion design, it has practical uses! Protecting your face from the wind and cold Who wants a part 2?

I think I’m getting the hang of this winter running thing! Here’s what I wore for my run in 43°F weather! - Base Layer: A moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirt to keep me dry. - Mid Layer: A lightweight fleece for extra warmth. - Bottoms: Fleece-lined leggings for added comfort and coziness. - Jacket: windbreaker jacket to protect against the chill. - I left my hat, but I made sure to bring gloves for my hands and hand warmers to stay warm throughout the run. Staying comfortable is key to enjoying my run, even in chilly weather!
