In a heroic display of instinct and skill, Australian professional surfer Mikey Wright was captured on video performing a daring rescue on Hawaii's North Shore on New Year's Eve, 2020. Wright, 24, was enjoying the ocean view from his residence near Ke Iki Beach when he spotted a woman being swept away by powerful, 15-foot swells after a "freak" wave dragged her from the rocks. Realizing that other bystanders were unable to reach her against the intense current, Wright famously handed his beer and phone to his wife, leaped over a backyard fence, and sprinted into the churning surf to intervene personally. Once in the water, Wright navigated jagged volcanic rocks and heavy surges to reach the struggling swimmer. With guidance from his sister, two-time world champion Tyler Wright, who signaled incoming "double-up" waves from the shore, Mikey was able to shield the woman with his own body and guide her back to safety. Despite the dangerous conditions that left both with minor scratches, the woman was successfully brought to the beach, where her family expressed profound gratitude. Wright later shared the footage on Instagram with the lighthearted caption, "Hold my beer," earning widespread praise from the surfing community for his selfless act. #hero #brave #man #sea
