Even with a brain the size of a poppy seed… bees are incredible. They can feel pain, remember scents, and even recognize faces-far more aware than we give them credit for. This little one landed on my hand and started rubbing his proboscis… almost like he was tasting or exploring. Not aggressive. Not scary. The color isn’t random. 🎨 Each year has an internationally recognized color code, allowing beekeepers to instantly know the queen’s age, monitor her health, and decide when a hive needs intervention. This simple mark helps track productivity, breeding cycles, and colony stability — all without harming the queen. The queen isn’t marked because she’s special in status alone, but because the entire hive depends on her. If she weakens or disappears, the colony can collapse. If your mason bee population keeps declining year after year… you should watch this. 🐝 Pests and fungus will eventually take over your nests if you reuse them without cleaning. Here are the usual culprits: • Predatory wasps — tiny holes in the mud caps • Houdini flies — messy or broken caps • Chalkbrood fungus — white, chalky plugs Here’s my simple system that fixed it 👇 1️⃣ Harvest cocoons in the fall 2️⃣ Remove pests and diseased cocoons 3️⃣ Clean the nest and replace the tubes Then in spring: 👉 Place healthy cocoons in an emergence tray above fresh tubes.
