Did you know the origin of the word SPAM? It actually has nothing to do with technology. Originally, SPAM was the brand of canned meat widely eaten by soldiers during World War II. It only took on the meaning of “something unwanted” in the 1970s, thanks to a comedy sketch from Monty Python’s Flying Circus. In the sketch, the characters are in a diner where every dish contains SPAM. Suddenly, a chorus starts repeating the word over and over until it becomes annoying — hence the link with something “unpleasant.” In the digital world, the first example of SPAM dates back to 1978 with the sending of the first unsolicited commercial message.
