The Battle of Uhud, also known as Ghazwa-e-Uhud, was a significant military engagement that took place in the year 625 CE (3 AH) near the city of Medina in present-day Saudi Arabia. The Battle of Uhud was a consequence of the escalating hostilities between the newly established Muslim community in Medina and the Quraysh tribe of Mecca. The Muslims had previously faced persecution in Mecca, leading to their migration (known as Hijra) to Medina. The Quraysh, feeling threatened by the growing influence and power of the Muslims, sought to crush their movement and regain control over Mecca. The battle took place on the slopes of Mount Uhud, located north of Medina, on March 23, 625 CE. Initially, the Muslim forces gained the upper hand by repelling the Quraysh attack and causing heavy casualties. However, a group of archers, against the Prophet's explicit orders, left their positions on the hill to pursue the retreating Quraysh, thinking the battle was won. This created a gap in the Muslim defensive line, which the Quraysh cavalry led by Khalid ibn al-Walid exploited, attacking the Muslims from behind. The sudden attack caught the Muslims off guard, leading to confusion and disarray in their ranks. Prophet Muhammad was injured during the battle, with rumors spreading that he had been killed, causing some Muslims to lose morale. The Quraysh, taking advantage of the situation, intensified their attack, inflicting further casualties on the Muslims. Despite the setbacks, a group of Muslim fighters remained steadfast around the Prophet, forming a defensive circle to protect him. Eventually, the Quraysh withdrew from the battle, believing their objective of defeating the Muslims had been achieved. The Muslims, though they had suffered heavy losses, regrouped and returned to Medina. The Battle of Uhud resulted in a tactical victory for the Quraysh, but they failed to achieve their ultimate objective of crushing the Muslim community. The battle highlighted the importance of discipline and obedience among the Muslim ranks, as the disobedience of the archers had a significant impact on the outcome. Hamza (RA) lost his life in this battle.

Mecca will always be just a blink away. I close my eyes and I can relive every moment I spent there. How commanding is the Masjid al-Haram, the “Sacred Mosque” or “Great Mosque of Mecca,” which is the largest mosque in the world. How dynamic to be in the epicentre of the whole world facing the kabah in prayer. How assuring to know that Allah is right there listening. To everything we pray, cry and ask for. It’s also a place of patience and endurance. We are reminded that we are part of a bigger picture and we’re just a small piece in it. But no doubt an important piece for only the sake of Allah. So if you get there, be very patient and kind even when it gets rough in the crowds. Everything is a test of our iman and understanding of Islam. Endurance is when you physically need to complete your umrah, do as many ibadah, tawaf as much as possible and imagine every Solat is 100,000 times the rewards you get in Masjid Al-Haram. So it’s truly the time to benefit from all the prayers. And always stay for Janaza Prayers after every Solat. The reward is of a Qirat (equivalent to Mount Uhud). Imagine that, insyah Allah Amin! Visiting the holy sites was surreal, imagine the actual places of stories from the time of our Prophets. One of my most favourites was the makam of Khadijah (RA) whom I gain so much inspiration for being a very successful merchant, first wife of our dearest Prophet (SAW) and the Mother of Believers. These sites give us real roots to the stories we read. Masya Allah Tabarakallah Thank you @diyanahalik for being my constant guide, you’ve given me so much more reason to learn. Your kindness to the people around you is always heartfelt and genuine. May Allah grant you the highest of heavens!
