THDJ Muggs of Cypress Hill building a beat at home in the early 90s.
Finding the sample used to be manual.
Before YouTube and online sample libraries, there was crate digging and needle dropping.
Manually moving the needle across the record, scanning for moments that feel usable.
Strictly taste and decision making being used.
Many think that sampling is about what you do after you find the sound.
If you chop it, loop it, or interpolate it.
But this is the part that determines if you really have the ear for sounds or not.
If the source isn’t right, nothing you do later will fix it.
Tools have changed, but the skill remains.

ZWCypress Hill - “How I Could Just Kill a Man” ⚰️
Straight off their debut Cypress Hill, this record set the tone early - dark, raw, and unapologetic.
DJ Muggs builds a dusty, heavy loop that feels tense from the first second. Nothing shiny. No clean edges. Just that low-end pressure and eerie samples creeping in the background.
B-Real comes in with that high-pitched, nasal tone that shouldn’t work on paper - but cuts straight through the beat.
Sen Dog balances it out with a rougher, grounded delivery. Together it sounds chaotic, but controlled.
