Ever wondered what space medicine actually is? 🚀   In this video I talk about what space medicine means, how to get involved, and what the future of the field looks like. As a 4x NASA space medicine intern, I have spent years researching the effects of spaceflight on the human body, especially the eye, at NASA’s Johnson Space Center.   I also share how aerospace medicine serves as the foundation for space medicine, where to find accredited programs, and how students and residents can gain hands-on experience through organizations such as AMSRO or NASA clerkships.   The space industry is rapidly evolving, and with private companies like SpaceX expanding the limits of what is possible, the future of human spaceflight and aerospace medicine has never been more exciting. This is the video I wish I had seen two years ago. If it inspires even one person to explore this path, then I did my job.   #spacemedicine #aerospace #medicine #nasa #internship

3 Tips for getting a NASA internship *as a pre-med/medical student*   1.        Apply. Apply. Apply: In my first cycle applying, I applied to over 100 internships at many of the major NASA sites all over the country. If you have a summer break or can graduate early, match the internship with your schedule. I know many interns who postponed graduation by a year to complete 3 internship tours at NASA. Pro Tip: Human Health and Performance Research takes place at Johnson Space Center.   2.        Focus on your skills and discipline: Apply to internships that correlate to your major during undergraduate training (even if you have already graduated). You don’t even need a STEM major for some of the internships offered. As a medical student, I focused on applying to internships in the “health professionals and related programs” but also sent applications to biology-focused programs since I majored in Cell and Molecular Biology during undergrad. Another example is applying to work in the NASA Neuroscience Laboratory if you majored/majoring in neuroscience. There is an internship offered for nearly every discipline out there.     3.        Meet basic requirements: Have a cumulative 3.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale). Be a full-time student (high school through graduate-level). Be a minimum of 16 years of age at the time of application (no exceptions). Undergraduate and graduate students must be enrolled full-time in a degree-granting program at an accredited college or university. I coordinated with my medical school and the internship coordinator to move my internship to align with my summer break, so try to be flexible with your schedule.   4.        Bonus: if you are a 4th year medical student, physician or pharmacy student, you are able to apply to the “NASA Aerospace Medicine Clerkship,” which takes place in October and April of every year.
